you can probably get decent chest gains but to really have a barrel chest you need to incorporate flys and other db lifts. also use wide grip to target those pecs

What matters is if you can physically get in the position to put enough load on the chest and keep that tension during the execution of the exercise. Depending on posture, shoulder rotation, etc. your chest could be fairly inactive during bench press whereas you hit it hard during dips or other exercises for example. At the end of the day it is best to experiment and see what works for you. Bench should always be a staple but it doesn't have to be your main exercise for actual chest development.
