What is /fast/?
>Fast is a thread for the discussion of intermittent fasting, fasting, water fasting, and dry fasting.
https://discord.gg/qqtQFDQ

What’s the difference between intermittent fasting, water fasting, dry fasting, etc.?
>Intermittent fasting: Fasting for a certain amount of time with a short eating window. 16:8 (16 hours fasting, 8 hour eating window) is the bare minimum.
>Water fasting: Fasting with only water.
>Dry fasting: Fasting with no water. Dangerous, use with caution.

Why should I fast?
>https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11147801
>https://idmprogram.com/difference-calorie-restriction-fasting-fasting-27/
>https://youtu.be/APZCfmgzoS0

How do I safely do an extended fast?
>Take snake juice, or just supplement electrolytes.
>Water=2L
>Potassium chloride =1 tsp (No Salt)
>Sodium chloride = 1/2 tsp (Himalayan Pink Salt)
>Sodium Bicarbonate = 1 tsp (Baking Soda)
>Magnesium Sulphate = 1/2 tsp (Food Grade Epsom Salts)
>Mix these in 2L of water and sip it throughout the day.
>[OPTIONAL] 2 tbsp Apple cider vinegar and 4 tbsp lemon juice. DO NOT MIX with snake juice, drink separately.
>You can also do this if you feel lightheaded, weak, dizzy, nauseous, etc., on shorter water fasts. Don’t do this while intermittent fasting.

Won’t I go into starvation mode?
>No. The mainstream definition of starvation mode is a myth. Read the FAQ linked below for more information.

Will (something with calories) break my fast?
>Yes.

Can I drink coffee, tea, and diet soda? Or anything with artificial sweeteners?
>You can do whatever the fuck you want. We recommend avoiding those, sweeteners especially.

Do I need a multivitamin?
>No

Please note that I've changed youtube video in the sticky with What I've learned's "Fasting Vs. Eating less" video since it has more backbone than the previous one.

Have long and healthy fasts filled with autophagy dear fasters!
>>
>>51139476
I've started skipping dinners and have noticed that I sleep better and can wake earlier without difficulty. Is this normal?
>>
Is doing my workout and twice the reps and half the weight going to help me preserve muscle during my fast? I'm currently at 30 hours. It's my first fast.
>>
>>51139697
If it works for you, who cares?
>>
>>51139712
Depends on how long you are fasting for
>>
Is it absolutely necessary to drink my protein shake within 30 minutes of finishing my workout? The problem is I started intermitment fasting and I usually start eating around 5 so I'd go workout at around 4 and when I get back home I can break my fast with a shake. But I'm considering going to the gym a lot earlier since it gets pretty busy around that time since it's on campus and I rather not wait to do my shit.
>>

48 hours.

Doing my 2nd water fast ever for I guess detox before I begin a diet. The last time I did this I managed 7 days but I knocked out when I took a hot shower one morning so I stopped. Yeah I didn't do it properly since it was on a whim and I was testing the waters.

I'm 2 days into this one and i'll be trying to follow what you guys have here.

Does drinking green tea break a fast?

What about protien shake (2 scoops) + water after a workout around 4:30-5:00 is that a bad idea if I am normally eating only between 9AM-11AM ?

Is 4 days fasting without snake juice a good idea?

/summerbulk/ reporting in with more progress. Took new measurements, seeing objective gains in all areas at the same bodyfat% I began at over a month ago. Lean gains are real, and a fasting-focused lifestyle makes it not only possible, but actually pretty easy. I'm sitting at about 10% now, the next experiment is dipping down to the 8% range and seeing how sustainable that is. Let me know if y'all bulkers have any questions, but the tl;dr is:
>20:4 IF
>200-300kcal surplus
>low carb (about 100g or so)
>do a 48-72 hour fast when you hit a personal fatness threshold (12% for example)
>reduce daily surplus if you hit your fatness threshold more often than every 3 weeks

>>
>>51144882

Don't give up you fucking fat worthless piece of shit. You can actually make a change QUICKLY if you can keep food out of your mouth for two fucking seconds.

If you can't do long-term fasting, DO 48S WITH A RE-FEED THAT IS BELOW 1000 CALORIES. Just don't pig the fuck out!

If you aren't able to do shorter fasts, then you should try doing something longer. It sounds counter-intuitive, but maybe you need to see some actual results to whip your baby ass into shape.

Just fucking do whatever you have to do for two fucking days to not eat. It isn't hard.
>>
>>51144474
I'm planning on starting my cleanbulk after getting shredded by the end of the July and it's kinda similar to yours. My plan:

>20:4
>500Kcal surplus
>Vertical diet (meat, rice and everything nice)
>one 4 day fast every month
>train 2 day split 5 days a week.

Aiming for 500Kcal daily surplus should be more than enough to achieve maximum hypertrophy. My daily calorie expenditure is roughly 2800-3200 daily so that adds up to roughly 12000 kcal deficit which balances out the 13000Kcal surplus from the diet. 4 fasting days per month should also provide me with all the upsides associated with longevity and health.
>>
>>51145211
>If you aren't able to do shorter fasts, then you should try doing something longer.

This is true. I burned myself up with the EOD fasting using 1500Kcal keto refeeds. Now on my 5th day of water fast and shit is so much easier.
>>
I just ate a teaspoon of salt and it actually tasted good. Does this mean I need more salt? 50+ hours on my current fast.
>>
>>51145655
Yeah man, it's been a game changer for me, this fasting minmaxing shit is wizardry

I will say that a lower carbohydrate intake lets me get in and out of ketosis quicker, and that's probably how I've been able to hit my fat loss goals in 48 hours or less in conjunction with fasted cardio, but if you're doing a four day fast it won't matter. Does eating higher carb not make you hungrier during your daily intermittent fast? Sure does for me.
>>
>>51146086
Yeah used to play around with lowering carbs and doing keto before fasts, but now having gone into this fast cold turkey from eating carbs I'm all goody.

I've been doing IF or variations of fasting for 7 years now so I guess I'm pretty adapted to not eating during the day. I do remember getting random hungerspikes during the day tho but nothing worth mentioning otherwise. I used to workout at 4PM and eat from 6PM to 10PM so it might be that my inner rhythm had adjusted enough. I also ate most of my calories from starchy brown spaghetti and minced meat which probably played some role in this, being that I would go to bed stuffed.

Carbon In Carbohydrates Out. It's what your body does when you fast for a while and only have small snacks in between.
>>
>>51148092
If you dry fast are you still keeping the carbsout bit going? I understand that your carbon from fat cells gets hydrated into carbs, but does it come from the water already in your body in that case?
>>
>>51148166
You literally breathe in water in gas-form, that's where a lot of the hydration comes from. Of course it's best to keep hydrated yourself though.
>>
>>51148166
>>51148177
It literally doesn't make a difference whether you drink water or not. Take a biology class, learn about the crebs cycle. The OH produced in the mitochondria while creating the energy your body needs to function is then used to hydrate the carbon (now free radicals technically) in the bloodstream. You do this all the time whether you're drinking or not, that's why you have a Basal Metabolic Rate.
>>
>>51148177
>>51148215
Either way I'm keeping the fast going with altoids then right? I suppose I could try going to a dry fast too to give it a kick
>>
QUICK QUESTION CAN I JERK OFF ON A DRY FAST
>>
Any of you guys who do OMAD, do you eat your meal and then also drink a protein shake? Like if I wanted my only meal to be at lunch time, could I do that and also drink a protein shake so I could workout in the evening and not have to break my fast by drinking a protein shake right after?
>>
>>51148343

>>
>>51148424
is it bad though
>>
>>51148453
Just don't eat it afterwards and you'll be fine. I made that mistake the other day just reflexively.
>>
So it seems that this prolonged fasting does not suite me well, or it suits me too well: This is now my third night not getting any sleep. The problems started on the 4th night. I'm kinda inclined to just start doing 72 hour fasts with 1000kcal refeeds, just as cole promoted in his new video. This shit pisses me off, because I've had zero trouble with anything else and barely feel any hunger and my energy is through the roof. But I think that not being able to sleep is a bigger detriment to my fatloss than fasting for shorter periods of time.

I think that the most optimal 1000kcal refeed would be eggs, beef and salmon with carrot, spinach, red pepper and kiwi. This way I would get most of the nutrients that I need.
>>
>>51148356
a protein shake is just food nigga just eat it in the meal, you can probably just adjust whatever you're eating and not eat the shake unless you're bulking hard and just want liquid calories
>>
after breaking a fast, I noticed I didn't get the usual diarrhea I have. I ate again on day 2. Day 3 I began fasting but had the largest stomach pains I've ever experienced. I live alone but I was wondering if I should get a neighbor or an uber to take me to urgent care. I sat on the toilet for about an hour and a half, with waves of pain coming, wondering if some internal organ of mine had just ruptured or if I was going to die. Finally, I let out a tough, constipated shit. After that came out, huge amounts of diarrhea came out behind it. I was literally 'backed up' and my body tried to flush out my colon but couldn't, giving me extreme pain. Would not recommend. Eat your fiber, kids.

just started fasting a week ago, doing usually 16-18 hours (depends on how work goes) is there anything else I need to be doing? I don't feel as great as people claim (mental focus, clearer skin etc) I just feel normal, i think I've lost a bit of weight (water weight or fat idk) because I've been eating at a deficit but at the same time I cheated on the weekend. Is there anything else I need to be doing, I know I shouldn't cheat my diet on the weekend, but should I add keto or something?
>>
>>51140709
Anon, have you replenished salts yet? Im worried

>>51144646
Pretty real. Noramlly your body has to do normal processes AND digest and process toxins from food.
If there is no food, then the remaining toxins can be focused on by the body. Which is why if you fast a week and have a shit, it'll usually not be very nice.

>>51147174
You dont eat when you fast. Cheat meals are you feeding your addiction to food, usually by eating carbs, breaking ketosis.
If you really must 'cheat' just do a 500kcal refeed on meat and veg. Then restart your damn fast

>>51150302
You're intermittent fasting, not fasting. Fasting is drinking snake juice and not eating for a week or 48 hours then eating a tiny meal and repeating.
Usually by the third day of not eating you'll feel like you have too much time and clear.

I still cant find the answers I want:

Is there much to be gained going from a 36 hour fast to a 48 hour fast in terms of autophagy?

Also, is there a chance of sorbitol filled toothpaste ruining my "pure water fast"? I mean if im gonna go all out and drop coffee then brushing my teeth will happily go too

>>51151251
Probably similar to just keto in general, once you go without sugar/fake sugar you dont really want sugar,

Ask anyone doing keto properly, its the bread and pasta you crave, ive never found myself wanting sugar once I stop having it, the idea of cola is sickening to me now

As much as you want. It's safe to consume upwards of 30g of sodium daily. Just be sure to drink water. Your body discards unwanted sodium in urine.

Type of salt doesn't matter. If you don't like eating processed food get Redmond RealSalt. It's unpolluted, unrefined, millions of years old salt with no additives like anti-caking agents.

I avoid Himalayan salt because it is from Pakistan. They probably get fecal matter and all sort of other contaminants in it because they are unhygienic.

I am a fatass /fast/ can I fast and do exercise/weights at the same time or would that be too much?
>>
>>51143684
Autophagy starts after some point in the fast and doesn't stop until you exit the fast. What do you mean diminishing?
>>51140709
There are still metabolic processes going on in your body, anon.
>>
>>51155671
Yes you can.

defo.
get out of your house and set a timer on your phone for 60 minutes. go for a walk on a straight line. when it buzzes, turn around a go back home.
do it every day.
>>
>>51155699
>>51155704
I dont mean just walks and a bit of bike and such, I mean full gym sessions while doing fast for maybe 3 days refill and another 3 days and so on.
>>
>>51155724
I didn't mean cardio either. You can lift. Personally I've noticed lower endurance fasted but as long as you don't try to break PRs you should be fine. Although, if you're still very novice, you can actually put on some strength while fasting
>>
>>51154848
Thanks anon, drinking a glass of warm water w/ salt in it.

Quick question because I'm a brainlet:

During a fast (say a good 72hrs in) can you calculate how much weight you'd lose over time? Basically is it simple CICO (2500kcal maintenance per day, add up till you get ~7500 for a full kg of fat lost) or is it different because of ketosis and other science shit?

Thanks pals
>>
>>51155724
I did it. Got really great results and didn't feel weak. Let your body get used to not eating for a few weeks before you really hit it though
>>
>>51155724
If you don't lift already then starting on a fast might be pushing it, bruv. Work on your mobility daily and maybe start a babysteps routine with 2 kg. dumbells. Bodyweight stuff is great but you might be too heavy for that - don't wanna push them joints.

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
>>
>>51143262
Coming from the same weight as you, being 170cm, my weight loss of 0.3kg a day came to a halt at around 60.5 kg with one warm meal a day and nothing else.

>>
>>51155877
CICO. Supposedly your metabolism goes a bit up, but I've only seen data for like 3 days, it could even drop after. After the first 72 hours you're basically done losing water anyway so you can translate whatever you're losing into calories, see how you measure up. Before the 72, assume your metabolism doesn't actually increase to be within a margin of error

I have done some fasting in the past but never a dry fast, do I bite the bullet /fast/? is it really that good?
>>
>>51155591
I've had these moments. Don't puke them out. Don't put yourself twice to shame. Instead, ask yourself why you had them readily available? I found that any relatives would literally try to feed my sugar when I didn't want it. Made me relapse and yoyo a bit.
>>
>>51155997
To follow up on your comment then - I've actually been on keto and in ketosis for a good month and I'm nearly 72hrs in this fast. Would it be safe to assume I'd be losing pure fat a bit quicker than the timeframe you gave?

Aiming for that sweet 5 day fast, most I've done so far has been 72hrs but it's SO much easier now that I was already in ketosis before I started. Hell, it feels like cheating even
>>
>>51155877
Never listen to CICO drones.

Your metabolism will increase on a fast due to factors such as mitochondrial uncoupling and increased adrenaline.
>>
>>51156110
>. Would it be safe to assume I'd be losing pure fat a bit quicker than the timeframe you gave?
Ι don't understand. You're not going to get shredded for skipping a couple of meals though, you need consistency
>it's SO much easier now that I was already in ketosis before I started. Hell, it feels like cheating even
I'd argue that fasting to go into ketosis is easier than going into ketosis to fast. Never had the flu fasting
>>
>>51155877
It's definitely not that simple because of homeostasis and all sorts of other crazy science shit. Plus you can't test for bodyfat % at home with any degree of accuracy when you're fat-fat (calipers are next to useless but measuring your waistline is not a bad idea) and the whoosh effect is real.
CICO is just a handy meme for fatsos in denial (muh genetics, muh metabolism, etc.).
>>
soft dry fast or hard dry fast?

Jesus Christ go get yourself some leaves and make your own tea what the fuck
>>
>>51156161
Homeostasis only goes so far. You can literally calculate how much energy moving X weight for Y distance against gravity will always at least take if you had 100% efficiency. No amount of "your metabolism will go down" can do anything about that.

Yeah, decided not to puke them in the end, went for a quick run to feel less guilty though
I live with my parents, my mother knows I've always liked sweet things so she keeps trying to buy them for me even though I told her it's best that she doesn't. I don't blame her, she means well, she just found me a weak fucking moment because I've got my last uni exam tomorrow and I'm really stressed out about it
How are you doing now, have you reached your goal and you're just doing maintenance?
>>
>>51151148
snake juice fast through weekends, and every weekday you arent lifting. You can go hard dry fasts during the weekends to speed up the cut.

I wouldnt recommend not eating a decent protein meal on the days you are working out.

Anybody else have trouble closer to goal weight? I'm ~10 lbs away and having a harder time going more than 40ish hours. Also noticing that even on a deload my workouts are taking longer to recover from. Weight loss has also slowed waayyyy down.
>>
>>51157264
same problem, no solution. I've tried 72's,48's OMAD for about 3 weeks now, nothing works. right now i'm 4 days in and haven't moved.
>>
>>51157394
I'm wondering if this may just be the point where extended fasting becomes less effective and I should just OMAD at a 500 cal deficit and CICO the rest. I look better than I ever have as a former fatass, but it's annoying that even with multiple 36 hour fasts per week I'm still only losing like 1 lb. Which wouldn't be that bad if I felt good, but I'm getting my ass kicked by my workout recovery.
>>
>>51157264
>>51157474
Yes. As you get close to being shredded, you will need to start eating. BF%?
>>
>>51157507
I'm having it measured at the beginning of july but I'd estimate 15-17% right now. hard to tell for me because I have really localized fat desposits (everything titties and lower back, lean arms and legs). A guy at work brought in one of those handheld estimators and it put me at 13.6% but there's no fuckin way that's accurate.
>>
Brainlet here
I didn't eat a thing since 10 days.
Drinking snake juice and doing cardio, but I am scared of losing muscles I am training, does the deficit cause any strong issues?
Let's say I eat every week or two once. Should I continue fasting and cardio without lifting?
I guess the body protects against muscle loss I guess?
>>
>>51157599
You're going to lose muscle while losing weight regardless of what you do. The point of fasting is that it's faster and that you lose less weight relative to what you would have lost on a CICO diet. If you're fasting for long periods of time there's no point in lifting because you won't build mass. If you have a base and you want to deload and maintain/keep the routine up, that's one thing, but if you're a noob, just start lifting once you're finished fasting and less fat.
>>
>>51157599
You can lift especially if you're novice but don't go too hard. If you damage the muscle, you'll have trouble recovering. If you experience DOMS, you fucked up. You guess right that the body protects the muscle by cranking HGH but there are limitations.
>>
>>51157648
>>51157662
So do cardio till you get shredded or die by graters.
And no lifting until I am in a weight that it makes sense.

Oh, and I am looking up keto since I read that it's the body's preferred fuel.
Can't wait to lose 10kg in 1 months or so.
>>
Is it normal for your shit to be darker and smell terrible after eating spinach?
>>
>>51157775
Might be the iron
>>
>>51157729
I wouldn't recommend starting lifting until you're closer to goal weight if you're a complete novice and not eating anything. Once you're at a decent weight just start eating more frequently and lifting and you'll make good progress with noob gains.

Is there a consensus on refeeds?
I'm teasing in for a 72+ hours fast. Now, I KNOW all forms of cutting will result in me losing some muscle. Its inevitable, however I try to minimize that as much as I can.
Now I'm 30ish hours into a fast and want to refeed on clean meat, tomato and pepper and Greek yogurt. Is it a good idea? I want to have a meal very rich in good quality protein, some fiber and micros from the vegetables, and immediately go into a 36-48 hours fast.
Is it a good idea?
>>
>>51158160
Refeed on keto.
Always keto.
>>
How important is it to have a good meal before a fast?
>>
>>51158249
Don't eat anything before a fast. Make it a double fast.
>>
>>51158225
You mean refeed once I reach ketosis or refeed on keto meals?
>>
Whats the consensus on your overall cal deficit when working in a monthly fast?

Im currently on 1800kcals (which is really low for my size/activity) and so with a 36 hour fast during the week should I raise the rest of the meals to 2100? which is still decently below maint for me.

I.e. 7x1800=12600 and 6x2100=12600

or should I just take that random days cals just skipped?

Im more focused on the autophagy and raised metabolism and less worried about the immediate weight drop from a fast
>>
>>51158249
>eating before not eating
just don't eat
>>
>>51158280
nigger. what do I eat before that fast then.
my last meal was shitty fast food and I'm either going to either start another fast either last night, or tonight after a hearty meal.
>>
>>51158289
The latter, you'll reach ketosis quickly while fasting. Especially if you're used to it.
>>
>>51158345
Just don't eat
>>
>>51158345
It's better to eat keto but it doesn't really matter. If you have like a milkshake or something sugary it's going to make it harder because those types of carbs tend to cause bigger hunger spikes. when I'm refeeding I usually eat a lot of vegetables, chicken, fish, avocado, eggs, etc.

>>
>>51158471
I usually refeed on one half chicken but this time I'm going to like a festival with friends and probably going to overeat there so I'm just gonna fast till then.
and maybe fast the week after.
I'm just so bad at doing things that it's best for myself if I just spur of the moment it, so I guess I'll start last night then (I omad obv).
>>
>>51158351
So should I just drop the vegetables? I thought it was a good idea to stack on micronutrients and shit.
Should I add eggs in coconut oil instead? Eggs, fatty meat, Greek yogurt? Sounds good to me to be honest, I just thought vegetables were a must on refeeds. Guess I learn new things daily.
>>
>>51158481
Enjoy dying from lost electrolytes.
>>
>>51158714
>So should I just drop the vegetables?
No, why? Vegetables aren't anti-keto unless you're eating like potatoes. Just stick to leafy greens and cruciferous veggies.

how do you manage to get all your calorie needs in 4h window?
>>
Is fasting purely for weight loss or can OMAD be done while maintaining muscle/weight? Or would that require obscene meals to accomplish?
>>
>>51159033
You're going to need to eat very nutrient dense foods to get all your macros and micros in. It's possible, but if you just want the health benefits you can just eat "normally" and add a 24 or 48 once every week or every other week, adjusting your caloric intake accordingly
>>
>>51150302
you are not fasting if you are doing 16/8 and "cheating" on the weekend. you need to have an internal shift and commit yourself

>>51150632
dude you need to figure out what is going on with your body. the internet will never tell you what is best for you you need to find it out for yourself through self experimentation. start prolonged fasting and then lift hella and see how you feel.

should i do bodyweight exercises or lift weights (im on stronglifts 5x5) while fasting? i want to preserve muscle mass as much as possible. currently 16 hours into my fast.
>>
>>51155877
From my experience with some longer term fasts (8,10,21 day fasts), my average of real fat loss is around 0.55 - 0.6 lbs per day and scale wise that is about 1.2 lbs of bodyweight lost for about the first 10 days. Beyond 10, weight loss slowed down a bit for me.
>>
I read somewhere if you restrict yourself to a VERY maximum of 50g carbs a day (this can vary, some say as low as 30g carbs maximum) you're still essentially in keto.
How true is this statement?

Are there any benefits to doing OMAD with a very small meal (around 250-300 calories)? Other than less calories in, that is.
Hunger is not a problem either way, but I feel much better throughout the day eating a heftier meal (900-1000 cal).
