Hey, a new fag here. I'm in finances and almost everyone around me flexes their Pateks and Rolexes. However there's something new money and competetive about it and I feel that once you've entered this game there's no way out and there's always going to be a bigger fish (or a rich trust fund kid). Is there such thing like a nonflashy watch that will be respected regardless? Do I need to go niche? Budget: £10-20k.

Don't buy a watch solely because your coworkers spend their money on watches you fucking retard
>>
>>14094535
First I would say that you shouldn't buy a watch out of peer pressure. Buy one if you actually are interested in mechanical watches.

Second, if you want a formal watch, buy a vintage IWC IWC Portuguese. If you want something more "rugged", get a smaller 40mm or less vintage IWC pilot.
>>
>>14094542
I like Portuguese more. This one is non flashy and classy, I could pull trigger on it. What are my other options?
>>
>>14094542
>>14094558
Just looked up other IWCs and golden IWC Portofino is even better. Thoughts? Also how the brand is regarded among watchheads?
>>
>>14094564
Modern day IWC aren't held in as high esteem as their older watches from the 80's and 90's. So if you like the look, look for a mint condition or NOS watch on chrono24.
>>
>>14094558
>>14094564
If they’re strapping Pateks on their wrists, they’ll look down on IWC. Fuck with them with an A. Lange und Söhne. Saxonia or 1815. Very well respected and very well worth the money. If you want to go big boy, throw in some more cash and get a Lange 1.
>>
>>14094568
anyone with any real respect for swiss watchmaking who isn't a mad cunt will respect a mint old stock IWC.
>>
>>14094574

>>14094568
I like Saxonia and 1815 thanks. A Lange seems to be a little over the top for my tastes, but again, I'm a newb. Should I go vintage, any particular periods? The price range seem to be wider here stretching from 10k to more than I initially wanted to spent.

If you really want to dunk on those guys, go to David Duggan in Burlington Arcade and ask to see some Urban Jürgensen watches. He's their London dealer.

UJ watches are completely hand made, with even finer finishing than Patek. UJ only makes a little over 100 watches a year and are mainly sold to collectors. Modern day watchmaking doesn't really get better.

Wearing ALS says a lot about you. Quiet wealth, loves fine, fine watchmaking, has good taste overall. A Lange piece is understated but if you know, you just know. You can never go wrong with a Lange, old or new there’s really no particular “period” with ALS.

You won't see much of this type of craftsmanship in Pateks or Vacheron watches.
>>
>>14094579
Adding to this >>14094590, the magic really shows when you turn over a Lange piece. Through the sapphire display back, you’ll see warm, lively German silver plates, the wonderfully blued screws holding down the traditional gold chatons with red rubies. See the balance cock? That’s hand engraved, there’s only six, six people at ALS that does the hand engraving. And you also get all the other „standard” but perfectly executed finishing. Anglage which is the bevelling of edges, Perlage which is the circular graining, the Glashütte stripes, black polish, solarised graining and etc. It’ll make you smile knowing that that’s just right on your wrist.
>>
>>14094606
ALS movements are beautiful, but it's sad their dials, hands, and cases are all stamped. No real handwork there.
>>

Status is one of factors in game here. I will buy something that I like in first place but since I'm new to this, then I'm aware that my taste is not worth much yet. The same way a person who has never seen a car could think that an F1 bolid or a monster truck is the best car out there.

>>
>>14094635

>>
>>14094638
Ok, so take the hands of the watch. On 99% of all watches, they are stamped out of sheet metal. If they are blued, they are usually blued with paint or chemically.

UJ hands are forged, precision fitted from three parts, and thermally blued, resulting in a more dramatic hue. All of this is done by hand.

https://www.urbanjurgensen.com/legacy/craftsmanship/hands
>>
>>14094634
David Duggan is a good guy, he knows his stuff. If status is indeed a factor, you won't find much better than UJ watches. Much rarer and much more hand made than almost anything else on the market. If Patek is Ferrari, then UJ would be closer to something like a Pagani. Both great cars, but one is certainly more of a handmade object than the other, especially in terms of the finer details. Rarer too.
>>
>>14094634
I understand, the Lange 1 can be a bit too overwhelming for some, especially with its outsize date but everyone respects the Lange 1. Any Lange piece is a status symbol so you already got that covered, with other brands such as Patek, it can seem a bit new money and tasteless even though a Patek isn’t really *just* a Patek. The problem lies with new rich people giving it that „glow”, especially when you’ve got niggers wrapping about their diamond encrusted Pateks. Lange just has the right balance. It’s understated enough for the wearer not to appear braggadocious while also having all the „flexing” power that comes with other brands and at the same time saying fuck you, I have taste without having to say that verbally. Watch this video on a visit to Lange’s manufacture in Germany, play it on 1,25 or 1,5x if you want to power through it. You’ll see how much work gets put into making a single Lange watch. https://youtube.com/watch?v=DGAsib-4mCk

>>14094725
Breguet started cutting corners in their dial guilloche process. Instead of using silver, which results in cleaner are sharper lines, they are using gold. Gold is easier to carve, resulting in a cheaper and faster process, but at the cost of visual clarity.

Movement wise, sure, amazing stuff. But a watch is much more than just a movement. The AP 11:59 movements are really great, but the watches are complete trash.
>>
>>14094797
You’re completely ignoring what’s been achieved because of the dial and completely saying they’re going downhill because of it. You do know dials can be changed right? You’re also completely disregarding the fact that this double oscillating system advancement can be introduced in other models as well. That’s not what I consider going downhill.
>>
>>14094805
Most people don't buy based on movements. They buy on how it looks.

Their sales are down and they don't know how to manage their retail.

Who else find the "wristwatch scene" extremely depressing?
It reeks of insecurities, snobbism, autism, elitism, stubbornness and fetishism. The market is plagued with utterly dishonest dealers, reviewers, influencers, and questionable brands’ policies.
Shitters or luxury, it all inevitably smells like a huge scam. I can feel how buyer's remorse is far more widespread than actual satisfaction among wristwatch collectors.

There is also a variety with bracelet. What do you think? I owned a bracelet watch once and it was terribly uncomfortable. Maybe because of my skinny wrist? Dude replied Grand Seiko to a guy wanting to out flex his coworker’s Pateks because “it’ll be a big name in the future”. The guy would be embarrassed if he followed that idiot’s advice. Same guy goes on to post his stale cherrypicked Rolex vs Grand Seiko meme. And straight up false? Do you not see the op pic is literally a DateJust copy down to the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet? You damn well know Seiko copies Swiss designs and it’s not just that copy in the op pic. This is the reputation of Seiko, a shitter brand that produces cheap watches, by extension Grand Seiko receives the same perception. They tried to cut it off by removing Seiko on the dial, instead of Seiko Grand Seiko, new models are now just Grand Seiko. But it still doesn’t work because there’s still SEIKO on the fucking dial. And the 40% off? Those are the Grand Seiko models with Seiko on the dial. It’s not a good fucking look to have old models be sold at such a steep discount specially when you’re trying to ditch that very fucking image.

Seconding this question. Does it make sense to get on their waiting lists just for a sake of reselling watches after you get to buy one? I assume that presence of waiting lists show that there's a higher demand than supply hence the watches should trade above the retail price. Am I being wrong here? It seems like (relatively) easy money if you have capital.

There is in many authorized dealer shops because fucking JERKS basically buy them all as soon as they come out and resell them on the grey market.

I found this, CWC weren't the only supplier, Precista and also Pulsar ( the Pulsars were dogs) were officially issued.

https://www.arrse.co.uk/wiki/G10_Watches

I found reference to MWC G10 style watches on another article being preferred for their chunkiness, more in line with contemporary aesthetics, but they must have been personal purchases rather than official procurement.

So if, like you said, I wanted "an interesting and historical" service watch a Precista would also be an option, but considering that less were issued the CWC would fit the main intent of a beater field watch.

> I can spend it on a Rolex and if I want to sell it in a few years I can get at least $7k and a buyer the next day

It's nothing to do with if you can afford the watch or not.

>Most serious collectors flip their watches
There's so much retardation in this single phrase I don't know where to begin, fucking lmao.

"Collectors" of anything other than maybe weapons are generally pathetic human beings.
They want constant newness to get that high, much like women like to go shopping and children constantly want new toys.
They also tend to engage in this collecting because they have no other discernable skill or interest of their own, so they fill the gap by simply paying for other people's skills and talents.

And "flippers" are even worse, chasing that newness high without actually being able to afford it.

And then there's the fact that collectors collect, and flipping is pretty much the opposite of that.

>Old stock doesn’t apply to watches
Source?

>that’s why European NOS watches fetch a goddamned premium
No they don't.

You are completely clueless. Collectors do flip their watches. Collectors buy watches to sell to get their final grail, almost all collectors do this, not just watch enthusiasts.

Exactly this. I was in a second hand watch shop the other day and someone brought in 80 watches to sell and every single one was worth many thousands. It was only part of his collection.

Yeah okay, go buy NOS Speedmasters or 1680s, let’s see if them being “old stock” will get you a 40% off including boxes, papers and warranty.

Better than being obsessed with brand perception because that's all you have.
