Post those times a comic/cartoon writer thought they had a genuine breakout cultural icon on their hands, and all that ever came of it was a wet fart.

Can I get a quick rundown on this guy?

What if Sentry was a good character that had interesting stories?

This thread would be better if it was about redeemed poochies like the one you posted.
>>
>>107595488
Superman if he was black and forced to retire in the 60s
>>
>>107595488
Basically the Sentry but black, retconned super-importance to the Marvel universe and all, though without the edgy dark side and with a dash of very poorly implemented Black Power wank.

Superman but also a super-scientist but also a soldier that earned every medal there was in the Korean war, but also kept his identity a secret because JFK didn't believe the world was ready for an amazing black hero like him.

Got brought back a few years back in an attempt to make him the new Black Panther-tier cultural icon, but he was dogshit and the team he was on's book was even worse so he's back into obscurity again. There's the skeleton of a great character in there is the worst part, he's just wasted on awful writers telling awful stories that focus on the worst parts of his character or backstory.
>>
>>107595585
Kinda wanna see him in the MCU, or any of the Superman copies like Sentry, Hyperion or Gladiator
>>
>>107595464
He should have become Captain Marvel
>>

I love Ewing for the most part, I was wrong about that much. But I can't lie and say I enjoyed Blue Marvel in any capacity.
>>
>>107595585
Him being forced to retire because 60s people would not want a black dude that powerful running around unchecked is fine. His power level and abilities just got wanked way too hard in the mini. Ultimates was better for him than Might Avengers.
>>
He has a great design and hook and was pretty cool in Ultimates. Methinks there's a race angle that's triggering you here, surprise.

I genuinely love Chloe but I cant deny that she's at best polarising. I do beleive that's just because Nick pushed the show on Nicktoons though and she would have been redeemed in more people's eyes if we got one more season.
>>
>>107595585
But Ewing actually did make Blue Marvel a decent character in Mighty Avengers and Ultimates.
>>
>>107595607
Seriously tho why hasn't any of the Superman wannabe's shown up yet?
>>
>>107595816
Just some right set up I guess, could see Gladiator being used for a Guardians movie or a CM one, I think Monica’s dated Blue Marvel so maybe in a CM sequel.
>>
>>107595464
He was always a little "too" perfect for a Marvel character. Since their whole thing was for each hero to have some kind of Greek Tragedy weakness to them somehow. But he's the most powerful hero on Earth, and the smartedt genius ever, with the mostest perfect family, and everyone that meets him loves him, it reads like a parody of 60s era Superman where everything goes great all the time.

The "he must hide that he is black" thing probably could have worked out in the 60s or 70s but does not really play out well in the 2010s. I'm not sure why he needed to be yet another Superman clone when Marvel was busy making up Superman clones at the time either.
>>
>>107595610
I thought they were going in that direction years ago with his whole Negative Zone connection thing going on. I assumed he was supposed to be like a living negaband and his name was already Marvel
>>

I know he has his fans, but the ridiculous push Marvel gave this guy back in the early 2000s was insane. Shoehorning him into flashbacks in nearly EVERY issue as one of Spider-Man's greatest foes as if he was on the level of Ock or the Goblins, even in what were supposed to be flashbacks to Peter's high school years and clear shout-outs to iconic Silver/Bronze Age moments, as if they were implying he'd been around longer than he had been. Even VENOM didn't get that kind of push when he was being shilled.

The fact that his most visible storyline after his debut was a decade later should tell you something.

Surely you jest, but it's always the same with these idiots.
>>107595877
>The "he must hide that he is black" thing probably could have worked out in the 60s or 70s but does not really play out well in the 2010s.
That's why that storyline took place indeed in the 60's, he's no longer hiding in the 00's and 10's. He was just retired to his lab.
> I'm not sure why he needed to be yet another Superman clone

I would say this one is a sadder case. Brought up as one of the new Inhuman characters if his series was not so slow he might have been something. But having him go through his redemption story arc and beat up Spider-man by saying his classic mantra is wrong, might have soured the character for fan. He's really one of those characters you introduce in another series and then see if he catches on when people are into his hook. He just was not likable and that matters for new ongoings.
>>
>>107595877
His flaws was that he basically gave up. At least, in Grievoux' story.
So while the X-Men were risking their lives for a world that hated them, Adam was just pouting.
>>
>>107596055
It's a shame, Mosaic was taylor-made for a tv series. He could have leaped from life to life, putting things right that once went wrong
>>
>>107596161
That's a flaw that only really works in a story where they're the only superpowered character. The Diligent Defender or whoever is the world's only bastion against evil, but the strain is so great he gives up from moral exhaustion? There's a story there about the burden one man can bear. When he gives up and then thirty other heroes swing in to pick up the slack it just makes him look like a punk-ass bitch and not someone you root for to get back in the saddle.

>Spider-man by saying his classic mantra is wrong, might have soured the character for fan.
Shame too because that was important to setup that his dad's way of doing this was wrong. The book was pretty good. But as you said likable characters are important and Mosaic being asshole is getting taken down a peg would work better if it happened faster of in a team book. Also five dollars for a fucking new character that isn't even a legacy is stupid.
>>
>>107596284
Then he didn't give up and it's not a flaw, anon. For fuck's sake.
>>
>>107595915
That business with the Totems should count as a poochie too, shit was so forced.
>>
>>107596260
But Kamala poochies harder than any of them. Tony and Carol fought over who could mentor her. Medusa was desperate to watch over her which she didn't do for any other nuhuman. She was teaming up with everyone. She was on the avengers is leading champions despite being one of the least experienced members. she was in every event to occur for the like first 4 years of existence. Pretty much everything people complain about Carol, Miles, and Riri doing Kamala got away with.
>>
>>107596426

Carlie is another one that just never stuck the landing either. Trying to create a new love interest for Spider-man at this point is just pointless. Unless your Gwen, MJ, or Black Cat your going to have trouble. To be fair she was not the only one either.

>Jill Stacy, set up but never paid off.

>>107596382
Ugh, yes. It dominated a ridiculous lot of Marvel merchandise and character guide books in the early 2000s. You'd be lucky to get entries for Mary Jane and Aunt May, but Ezekiel was a prime priority for full bios.

>>
>>107595488
Black Superman in Marvel that decided to retreat to his fortress of solitude like a bitch during the 60s because the government was ready to shoot all the black people if they got too uppity while he was around.
Not really a poochie since he never really got a push beyond showing up in black team comics or in the background during events like any other character.
I'm pretty sure that people here were just mad that he was black since Tony Stark gets way more poochie or Gary Stu moments post MCU without any complaints while him remembering that he has a lab sets people off.
>>
>>107599078
Yeah getting rid of Tony for a year in order to replace him in the MAIN IRON MAN TITLE with a completely new oc to push diversity sure screams Gary Sue for Tony! When was the last time Batman and Supwrman replaced for a year+?
>>
>>107599151
The MCU has been around longer than that and they couldn't even let him stay out of comics while he was dead because a hologram Tony immediately popped up.
>>
>>107599228
When was the last time DC had the audacity to make Batman and Superman dead for a year and a half and replace them in their MAIN TITLE for a diversity angel? Because the way they treated Tony was awful. I wish Marvel would treat Gina s a Gary Sue. Maybe shit like this wouldn’t happen then.
>>
>>107599284
You mean besides the time they replaced him with Mon-El after revealing that Daxamites all have latino human ancestry mixed into their DNA?
You're just a whiny bitch that thinks everyone can't tell that you would completely forget poochie exists if they weren't black.

Please explain to me how killing a character off for a year and half and replacing them in the main title (side titles and stories are cheap and don’t count) by a completely new oc out of nowhere is respectful and pushing Stark? When did that even happened to Batman or Superman?
>>
>>107595464
I haven't read anything with Blue Marvel but I'm intrigued. Isn't there a hint of Tom Strong in there? I actually LOVE the idea of a black pulp-style science hero in that vein running around during the earlier half of the 20th century, getting into crazy pulp adventures and having to deal with shit like Nazis like Indiana Jones but also racism from the people who're supposed to be on the same side as him.
>>
>>107595915

>>
>>107599419
Dude. Stop digging yourself in deeper and showing you don't read comics. Ignoring the previous case of Superman disappearing for a year, the one time he was actually dead brought out no less than four fucking OC Donut Steel characters.
>>
>>107599469
>Isn't there a hint of Tom Strong in there?
Yes, Ewing basically turned him into Anti-matter Tom Strong\Doc Savage, dealing with stuff in the shadows
>>
>>107599648
That's really cool but doesn't he still have the powers of Superman?

>>107599709

>>107599709
Superman tier is top tier but the power balance isn't as completely broken as you'd think since there have always been tons of roughly superman tier characters in marvel that can be taken down by teams, clever tactics, or exploiting weaknesses. The real danger (like with superman) is if he has time to retreat back to his lab. When Superman isn't punching you that's when you should really get worried.
>>
>>107599483

>>
>>107600021
Makes sense for Sentry due to the kinda story they set out to tell. Of course, after his full introduction into the greater Marvel Universe, it stopped making sense.
>>
>>107599990
That guy was demanding examples of something similar happening to Batman or Superman as an attempt to dodge the fact that his 1 year of Riri doesn't cover 10 fucking years of the MCU,Marvel trying to get SYNERGY dollars via pushing Tony Stark everywhere and rapidly escalating his capabilities. He got examples of it happening to Batman or Superman. Every single one of his posts is just an attempt to avoid the fact that people realize he's full of bullshit even if Riri is trash under Bendis like every other character he's made.
>>
>>107596908
Didn't Carlie come about almost immediately after OMD?
There's no way that Marvel should have expected a new character to fill the void so soon.

>>107598717

I figure that after Gwen was killed, MJ was the best regular/established character to take her place, rather than add a new character.

Jesus Christ I just read a bit of his debut comic to see what he's about and its not very compelling.

I think literally the only "negative" this guy has is his race.

They made him a super genius, a top athlete, a top military soldier, with no vices personality wise. Then on top of that they make him outclass all of the avengers with SENTRY included.

Granted I've only skimmed the 1st issue

yeah, basically you just need to know his best friend\archenemy kills his wife forcing him out of retirement.

Then go on reading Ewing's Mighty Avengers, where he gets actual character development and faults.

>>107602910
which is funny because in the aforementioned Mighty Avengers, Cage has the most antagonistic relationship with Brashear, basically thinking him a coward sellout, while Brashear in turn has a degree of holier-than-thou approach toward the ex-criminal Cage
>>
>>107595877
Did we read the same comics?
His personal life is a disaster. His best friend is his oldest enemy. His wife is long dead. His oldest son was lost in an alternate dimension and became an energy monster. His youngest son is a terrorist superscientist. His daughter is the only decent one. He's resented by the people he meant to inspire (like Luke Cage) because in their eyes he gave up by retiring when the president asked him to. The first thing that has seemed to go right for him has been the relationship with Monica Rambeau, but he's still like 50 years older than she is and it's creepy as fuck.

The problem with the Blue Marvel is that he had no drawback. He was more powerful and more stable than the world-destroying Sentry, who was a basket case.

Every time the Sentry goes apeshit, the unspoken question is "Hey, why not get the Blue Marvel instead?" It's like if there was a version of Superman who was older, more powerful, and had no weaknesses. The question is "Why not ask this man for help instead?" More, Blue Marvel isn't even particularly adverse to providing assistance. He's active in the Mighty Avengers and Ultimates.

Well okay look I think not having a draw back does not make a character bad outright. But I think the Blue Marvel's problems come from a lot of factors.

1. The continuity issues he brings up, like Marvel has a superhero history that goes beyond just the golden age then modern age and the truth? Early writers introduced black superheroes who operated in the 1950's. Because well they want to have more diverse characters in the past. So his excuse to quit is kind of lame.

2. Marvel has so many superman character besides the Sentry. Some you never heard of. It also hurts that Icon from DC/Milestone already did the whole black Superman thing first.

3. His miniseries was not the best written comic, and this matters a lot. When you introduce someone while they might get better after showing up getting a title right off the bat with your name and is mediocre means most people are not going to care.

I like what Ewing did with the Blue Marvel, but when your first story for Marvel is how you quit for DECADES AND NOW show up, he ends up looking like an asshole no matter what.
