It is that simple

It's just Welsh, they're only spelled odd to us because of the unique orthography, like Irish names (Siobhan, Sean).

I watched it dubbed into Japanese on Nico Douga. Her name was translated as エロイ媛 there which can be read as "erotic princess". Commenters found this endlessly amusing

I remember seeing a commercial as a kid in the 80s and in it, they spoiled this kiss

Whore.
Deserves torture.
>>

>I remember seeing a commercial as a kid in the 80s and in it, they spoiled this kiss
The goal was to make you feel funny in your pants so that you’d watch it. Disney knows what they’re doing
>>
>>105834727
when is Disney gonna make another series for her

>>105845232
The Black Couldron is a secret shame for them rivaled only by Song of the South, the answer is never. Shame as if the cut footage still exists (even in crappy videotape dailies form like all the cut footage on the Criteron Breakfast Club blu-ray) they could sell a lot of discs using it as a lure for enthusiasts, but it will never happen

The Black Cauldron is alright but clearly butchered to hell in editing, it’s far from the worst but it’s a real stretch to call it one of their best.

It was a financial disaster and the management at the time (that came into power halfway through production and demanded many changes) hated it and the fact that it was originally targeted towards older audiences. It’s definitely a black sheep in their filmography that’s said to have nearly destroyed the company and Japan is the only place where it’s ever had much acknowledgement (Tokyo Disneyland had a spook house attraction that featured Eilonwy), probably for the loli princess factor.
>>
>>105846989
It was their foray into a darker story movie, and then it didn’t do too well in the box office.
>>
>>105847074

Sounds a lot like the same issues Treasure Planet / Atlantis had. Disney can't commit to anything can they.
>>
>>105847183
Treasure Planet and Atlantis also had the pressure of competing with Harry Potter and Shrek at the time of their releases, meanwhile Black Cauldron was beaten by the fucking Care Bears movie.

I wouldn't mind a sequel where the boy and girl are a romantic couple, but in an awkward and innocent way. Maybe the over-arching plot could be them having to deal with the spirit of the Horned King lingering in this world and they must find a way to destroy it or seal it away forever.
>>
>>105843430
There has been talk that this show's art started from some leftover black cauldron designs
makes sense, it was their first foray into high-quality tv animation, might as well give yourself a head start and try recycling something that didnt make enough
>>
The movies problem isn't that it's bad, it's simply that nobody has seen it to decide one way or another.

Lads I'ma post this in here, the Chronicles of Prydain is one of my favorite book series and I was really sad that they didn't get a full adaption to the movie screen. Like, I read through the series and loved every minute and the ending just left me kind of empty inside because I knew there wasn't anymore

It is! The Dark cauldron is actually the third book in the series and the horned king is actually a servant of the true evil if I remember correctly. The books go hugely more into the lore, the world, and the growth of Tarran, Flewder, and Elionwy. Theres a whole book about Tarran trying to find his parents as well and its very depressing.

theyre not like full-on huge thick novels. lloyd alexander likes to write for kinda-everybody. before 'young adult' was a genre. he also wrote other good stuff totally worth checking out, like The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen and uh.. Time Cat
>>105851409
now that sounds right. but most of the movie was first book.
>>
>>105851467
Yes, the movie was mostly an amalgamation of the first two. Which is a shame, as I mentioned Taran the wanderer is my favorite and I'm sad it never got animated

Honestly, having memories of watching this as a kid, it didn't really scare me over much and as an adult I really like that animation and art. I guess you could argue its pretty dark but I remember the books having pretty dark descriptions of how the cauldron born come to be anyways. But, I'm fairly biased, I like the series and I like the movie.

Black Cauldron I can kinda see but really its just don bluth with -50% soul and -75% plot cohesion. Defiantly not the best but I see why it has fans.

You can strait fuck the right off with Song though. It added nothing new to Disney animation, was boring as sin, and would of been completely forgotten shaggy dog style if not for lol tarbaby. Its not even nearly as racist as some other shit that came out in 46. The only reason its remembers because its was Disney.
>>
>>105851384
But it turns out okay for him and Elionwy, right? They grow up together, fighting evil and overcoming the Big Bad at the end, and have fully realized character arcs; He becomes the great warrior he's always wanted to be with actual proof of it, and she becomes the ruler her people need?

>>105852079
Yeah no, its satisfying and accurate to their characters and good for the world. Its just me, I'm sure, if I get hooked into a book series I really enjoy it and when I finish it, good or bad it feels like a little of my soul goes away when I close the book. Like, they got their ending but I still have a long way to go and my life isn't anywhere near as good or as happy as theirs was. Its like losing a best friend every time you finish a book series. My memory is really good too, so I usually don't re-read books. But especially for stuff like this, I really tend to over empathize with the main character and their hardships and struggles. Its why I like book 4 as much as I do. Taran goes from a young idealistic kid to a mature adult, more accepting of his life but also stronger and sureer about himself and his role in the world, its even commented on by Dallben when he returns. Fictional characters grow up and get arcs, real people just kinda....don't. We have to figure it out for ourselves, its a lot different.
>>
>>105852079

You should realize these are kids' books.

Read Robert Conqust's third law, it applies to corporations as well. At some point the workers and managers of the corporation stop caring about the well being of the corporation and will do anything to prevent them from losing their cushy position even if in the long run it hurts the corporation. Jus see what is happening with star wars. Normally corporations like disney would get bankrupt and new competent animation studios would rise up but because of government cronyism and government collusion they are too big to fail and also destroy all other competition.

The way I see it in order to get companies like disney to fail and allow their competitors to flourish, massive deregulation needs to happen and also huge encouragement and promotion for worker co-operatives such as giving them tax cuts

It seems like Lloyd Alexander's whole Prydain series sort of vanished entirely from the collective consciousness. They seem to have made quite the impression on kids who read them in the late 60s & early 70s, but besides the '85 Disney film, they just entirely fell off the map.

My guess is that they just got completely overshadowed by (a) Tolkien later moving from the underground to the mainstream throughout the 70s and 80s and everyone dismissing Alexander's stuff as derivative and (b) Star Wars coming out in 1977 and making every other work of YA fiction that relies on a generic bildingsroman/hero's journey plot look anemic.

And the question I always feel to ask when I see something like that:

Why aren't you writing that story? Used to be, if someone had an idea they did something with it.
>>
>>105861999
I didn't read the series til ~2004, my 8th grade English teacher had the whole collection and I fell in love. I got bored of Harry Potter after the 5th book, but I still wish there was more Prydain stuff. It could use a good adaptation.
>>

Like a TV show. One season? Wouldn't even cost too much, I should think.

Eh. Maybe like a bunch of TV movies instead?

I might someday, but I have too many other things in line ahead of it.

good oldfashioned rape cen be nice once in a while, but like, in the bodice-ripping oldtimey sense where she's totally into it. If the subjects aren't happy, I'm not terribly happy.
Of course when it comes to commissions, you can't be picky. I do so much repetitive bondage crap I don't put online.

Eh, fantasy was never mainstream until the Harry Potter books and the LOTR movies. The LOTR books were just as obscure to general audiences like Prydain and Dark is Rising and other series until it got movies.

Harry Potter connected with kids who grew up alongside him. But then so did Taran and his first readers, but he didn't get a movie push until his series was over.
>>
>>105869466
Also in the US and elsewhere, Scholastic helped sell the Potter books a lot as school media. Though I don't know about the UK where it started, I guess it was similar. And this was in the days where the internet was exploding so fandoms could grow much quicker than through meetups.

I miss when the kid's adventure books genre wasn't all just massive chonk books and endless series.Rowling changed shit.
>>
>>105870250
eh, His Dark Materials was pretty thick
which just made me feel like an idiot when I got sudden-pointless-contrived-tragedy'd at the end and regretted reading it at all.
then later found out the guy was a massive fedora, and what I took as specifically anti-catholicism (and thus pro christianity) was in fact just clumsy anti religion overall. Even weirder than finding out Dogma wasn't a specific knock on catholics. Sometimes I feel like nobody is with me and everything is better in my head
>>
>>105861999
Its hard to keep books aimed at this age level relevant through ages. Harry Potter is a freak occurrence that is immortalized through the movie series. Young reader books can become standards because they're used to teach kids. But when you get to stuff aimed at kids ages 8 onwards, there's such a branching of tastes its hard to be relevant to all kids which keeps it niche, and as those kids grow they hop onto more complex books, or at least ones aimed at higher reading levels or seem more mature. The books they read in the middle , between their early childhood and adulthood, get forgotten; they don't talk about them, don't recommend them, don't analyze them. As a result, they don't get preserved in pop culture as well.

A similar thing happened with animorphs; they attempted a relaunch but it didn't resonate with modern kids or wasn't marketed properly.
>>
>>105870203
Yeah I realized like a second after I posted that that I could've just searched for ColdFusion on DA lol

>>
>>105870388
all the more reason it's baffling
harry potter is the antithesis of what makes something good and likeable to kids. it goes out of its way to be babyshit-flavored, despite being good down to its skeletonbones. i think it was all just manufactured. everyone acted like they'd never read fantasy before in their life
it's like people acting like zootopia invented furry

Tolkien was very popular in the hippy counterculture of the late 60's and early 70s.

Led Zeppelin is the obvious one, and who can forget Leonard Nimoy's hilariously campy flower power anthem "The Legend of Bilbo Baggins."

It also tied in very closely with the British medieval folk rock scene that was popular at that time, like Fairport Convention and early Jethro Tull.
>>
>>105870301

The ending was definitely pretty contrived to be a downer.
>>
>>105870536

You underestimate how infrequently most people read for pleasure.

Harry Potter was freak event because there was significant peer-pressure involved - you didn't want to be the only person in your peer group who didn't read it. For some people today, Harry Potter is still the most recent book they read that they weren't forced to for school.
>>
>>105870776

How do religious people reconcile with billions of people believing their different religions are the one true religion and even those are divided up into different ways to worship? Like what do they teach in catholic church that deals with this question?
>>
>>105873806
How did that turn out by the way? Ive seen a lot of defenders back before it came out.
>>
>>105873877
it helps when we don't have the shit YOU've been taught blaring at us night and day confusing us with ridiculous ideas about 'billions of different religious beliefs'
there's like six.
they're bad copies of the right one. once you look at it that way, it makes perfect sense.

and catholics teach that dudes in tall hats have the right to decide everything, even when they contradict themselves. and the book.
the book that specifically says 'don't listen to weird guys who make positions for themselves and start making up rules and methods of worship'
it's realllly not that complicated. and the more you study about the roman empire, the less any of it surprises you
>>
>>105873968
6 is more than one. I grew up in Billy Graham country and evangelicals come off the same as used car salesmen to me so I never had a chance at being religious. I'm not down right against it. I mean if I win $1000 on a lottery ticket I think damn I'm lucky, that's not to far from damn I'm blessed. Just wondering how that is dealt with internally. Especially with religions that grow from the same tree like Abrahamic ones.
>>
>>105851843
They are disturbed by anyone daring to entertain the idea that they might lose.
>>
>>105873806
Yeah, the anime doesn't do the manga justice at all.
>>
>>105874007
i have found that, ironically given the sad state of american christians in believing (what is almost certainly the devil saying) that entertainment media is harmful, it takes a solid grounding in fiction to understand the way religion works, especially with that whole 'abrahamic' neologism. There's canon, retcons, fanfiction, sequels, even the odd prequel.
those sleazy TV guys operating out of tents probably don't want people understanding fictional tropes because they'd recognize it when they saw it.

The oldschool pre modernish kingdom of a vague size, small with many unonowns about the wider world, died. Id guess its because EPIC SCALE and POWER LEVELS got too popular. Cant just have stories set in a smallish kingdom with nice tucked away communities

Meh, I was first offered Harry Potter in the 3rd grade, in 98/99 i think, cant remember..... It was 99

I read a few pages and didnt care. I read significant other books and fantasy books from then to middle school, at which point I think i got some as a birthday gift so i read them.

I had placed a higher priority on Julies Wolves, Black Stallion/other horse series, Hero and the Crown(Damned good two book series).

And Redwall. And some others at the local school library.

The Chronicles of Prydain are like a distillation of Welsh mythology, which is the lesser known family of celtic myths compared to the Irish, but still contains great stuff like The Mabinogion.

The Horned King is just the servant or Arawn the Death-Lord, king of Otherworld, a mythic figure whom in later Welsh stories was renamed or supplanted by "Gwyn Ap Nudd" - "white son of Nudd", I believe both figures are depicted leading The Wild Hunt, and Gwyn Ap Nudd is pictured as a man with antlers and a blackened face riding a horse, accompanied by white dogs with red ears, and a host of his fairy subjects, and the the souls of the men they've kidnapped for their host.

You see, The Wild Hunt is the old-world version of Ghost Riders In The Sky.
>>
I would like to see a restored version of this.
>>
>>105874033
I meant the Hollywood movie, but yeah, the anime is really dumbed down compared to the manga.
