When you can't afford 10 dollars a roll at a good sushi joint, what supermarket do you go to?
>>
>>12618265
Fry’s hands down but if there’s not a hopeless looking Nip behind the counter I don’t bother
>>
>>12618265
Supermarket sushi is just as expensive
>>
>>12618290
Depends on the market or the sushi place we're talking about.
>>
>>12618289
I'm a F L O R I D A M A N so I go for Publix sushi most of all, they do a good job.
>>
>>12618298
It’s pretty much identical anyway, most Fry’s have a bigger selection of sushi though
>>
>>12618290
No it isn't
>>
>>12618320
I've never even heard of Fry's. We've got some Trader Joes down here (garbage sushi) some Whole Foods (Good but too expensive) and some at Target (average) but Publix is probably the best for reliable quality, and they custom make shit for free.
>>
>>12618289
had to move to az from tx and frys is the worst shit ive ever tried. It tastes like it was frozen beforehand and defrosted then covered in mayo. OP the best sushi is from HEB sushiya but you can only get it in texas.
>>
>>12618342
If I'm ever in Texas I'll have to check that out. Sushi is my favorite food and I love trying different kinds and varieties.
>>
>Kroger
>$7-$13 for a single roll
>old, rice is bad, only find salmon, tuna, or imitation crab
>everything covered in 10 kinds of sauce and soggy fried onions
>Meijer
>$7-$13 for a single roll
>old, rice is bad, only find salmon, tuna, imitation crab, and eel
>everything covered in 10 kinds of sauce
>Walmart
>lol don't

>An actual sushi place
>$6-$20 for a single roll
>but it's all fresh, dozens of types of fish
>not made by someone who couldn't get a better job than a grocery store sushi counter

It's not cheaper, and it's worse by a lot.
>>
>>12618363
Man when I go to Publix its got fresh, flavorful rice, excellent spicy mayo and strong sushi flavor, good, tender fish, and always fresh avocado/carrot/whatever the fuck non-fish you put in the sushi roll, its all good. You just have shit places. I've never even heard of Meijer, what state are you in?
>>
>>12618376
The more you try to defend garbage "sushi" from a grocery store the more I'm convinced you have never had good sushi.
>"excellent mayo"
>carrot
>"strong sushi flavor"
Yeah, confirmed for tastelet dumdum.
>>
>>12618435
I've had good sushi before man, I've been to the actual restaurants. Overpay all you want dumbass. Sushi isn't some insane groundbreaking flavor thing. Its rice and seaweed with fish and optional sauces. You sound like someone who only drinks artisan glacial rosewater-concentrate infused water from Whole Foods.
>>
Bento is good. Might just be a leaf brand though I don't know. Just finished a Cali shogun tray.
>>
>>12618537
/this, artisan anything is the worst meme to ever happen to food. Most ethnic foods are peasant food like pizza and tacos so adding super expensive ingredients actually takes away from the authentic flavor. If you're paying more then $20 a roll you're a retarded hipster paying for meme experience
>>
>>12619027
I don't pay more than 10 usually because every wednesday Publix has a 5 dollar deal for all the sushi. Its awesome because the sushi is good shit.

>>

I make my own. Grilling the eel on the George Foreman is awesome.
>>
>>12618321
It is in cucknada where I live.
>>
>>12619067
there was a sushi place run by some fresh off the boats that was all you can eat but you had to order a specific number and for ever piece you didn't eat they'd charge you like $4 so you learned real quick to order exactly how much you actually wanted. best sushi i've ever had though, super worth the gamble.

once showed up at their place a 9pm not realizing they closed at 8pm but we had a party of 8 so they opened up shop for us and they straight up only spoke two words of English "yes" and "no' but they could make a fucken decent roll. We were drunk and rowdy AF, i think we left a $50 tip just for opening up after hours and putting up with us
>>
Sam's Club actually has dope sushi.
>>
>>12618265
Rema 1000 by far
>>
>>12619067
who has ate the most sushi bites at one of these buffets? My own record is 44. Just straight up halved the poor lady's dinner preparation right before 5pm in like 15 minutes. I didn't eat anything else while I was there and had a tough time driving back home.
>>
>>12618265
I love Sushi but if you want parasites and tape worms living inside you then eating it is the way to go..
>>
>>12618265
My sushi place does a 3 roll lunch with soup and for $12. Even the cheapest roll at the grocery is $6 so I don't ever bother.
>>
>>12618290
waaaaayyyy more, just go to an all you can eat for like 18 dollars
>>
>>12619105
You have no one but yourself to blame for living there
>>
>>12619670
>My sushi place does a 3 roll lunch with soup and for $12.
And what?
AND WHAT??
>>
>>12618265
>be me
>work at sushi restaurant
>go to grocery store after shift
>grocery store sushi is more expensive than the stuff we make fresh at the restaurant
>never buying grocery store sushi, ever
>>
>>12618265
Whole foods.
>>
Wegmans sushi is god tier but if you live close enough to a Wegmans to get any, you already know this
>>
>>12618290

>>
Fuck supermarket sushi. I go to the Korean market and get kimbap
>>
>>12619121

...wat?
>>
>>12618325
Frys is Kroger
>>12618342
Some Frys have cardboard sushi, others have the hopeless chinky chef as mentioned previously makin* some good rolls
>>
>>12618363
More like $2 - $16 at a real sushi place, veg rolls are really cheap for them to make

>>
>>12621986
Fuck off weeb.
>>
>>12621204
it was $17.95 and you could get as much as you wanted but they made it up fresh for you and if you ordered like an idiot and said 40 pieces when you could only eat 15 well they charged you for every piece you didn't eat. Also no sharing with other people at your table, like i said they were fresh off the boat and strict AF but the food was on point and $17 for a feast was not a bad deal considering the quality and service.
>>
>>12622281
no sharing lmao. God you gotta love fucking jap jews
>>
>>12623055
they literally had their kids working there, 7yo busing tables lmao. But the food good and the kitchen was spotless clean which is something i care about when dealing with foreigners. I don't know what the roll is called but they would do a quick pan fry to make the outside warm crispy but but the inside was still cool and it was fucking good
>>
>>12623136
Sounds good dude, wish I had a place like that nearby.
>>
>>12618325
And Wednesdays is 5 dollar sushi. They do make slightly smaller portions and less variety, but 5 bucks for 2 pieces of tuna roll, 4 pieces of salmon roll, and one each of tuna and salmon sushi is a great deal and a great lunch.
>>
>>12623162
Absolutely yea, I feel the same way about Publix
>>
Banks
>>
>>12618265
WinCo. They’re not disgustingly Americanized and all covered in mayonnaise like OPs pic thankfully.

>When you can't afford 10 dollars a roll at a good sushi joint, what supermarket do you go to?
Supermarkets are regional. Seafood freshness is regional, as well. The more powerful a buyer your brand is, the better choices in wholesale seafood, where you either pass on the cost, or your giantness reduces your cost from sheer size of your orders. Therefore, taking a national survey probably does little good. Supermarket sushi is going to have soggy kelp unless they are making it to order.

For people who are continental, real travelers who experience a lot of regions of supermarkets and have some disposable income, ie not Real TravelersTM, there's some value in a survey based upon comparisons.
In Miami, where I'm originally from, local popular sushi group SushiMaki http://sushimaki.com/ stocks an actual sushi bar counter at Whole Foods and makes it fresh all day to order, as well as provides some lunch crowd to the small set of usual WF dining area. This restaurant also stocks the sports stadiums, airports, university canteens and other catering venues around town. Outside of that the highest rated grocery in the Southeastern states, Publix, does a similar sushi counter prep in each store and experiences a happy following.

In the mid-Atlantic, I'd say Wegmans leads the way for quality in sushi takeout and most other takeout for busy exec types or health food convenience people, maybe Harris Teeter is the close 2nd. Trader Joes, ehh, maybe a Fresh Market. Almost all of the time, you're better off getting takeout from the best 2 or 3 restaurants in town instead, the places with the good smoked eel and variety of roe Contrary to your ideology, sushi is a higher priced convenience food in a grocery, and like salad bars by the pound, it isn't usually a cost savings. It's got a food safety timer on it, so the waste of throwing out perishable food that didn't sell is high enough not to give the food away at a normal cost.
>>
>>12623136
Never heard of anything like that before but it sounds pretty cool. God I'm still loling at the no sharing. I just have the image of the Soup Nazi in my head from Seinfeld. Instead of, 'NO SOUP FOR YOU' - "NO SUSHI FO UUUU"

japanese love mayonnaise
>>
why not, cook the fish?
sushi is a Japanese scam.
Japanese are so stupid for eating raw fish, and are too arrogant and proud to admit their cuisine is barbaric and silly. Fish is gross anyway, and raw fish is super gross.
Anyone who eats sushi is a moronic fool.
>>
>>12623361
Yeah, no. Not on sushi. This is an American thing, and arguing it makes you look like a dumbdumb.

In case people don't know, all of the Safeway Sushi stands are actually leased spaces that companies like AFC franchises out to small entrepreneurs.

My wife did this before, and it only cost her about $15k for a safeway sushi franchise. AFC provides all the ingredients for a fixed fee and all she has to do is roll sushi and kick back a small percentage of profits.

I don't want to say how profitable these franchises are, but I can say she started with 1 stand 10 years ago and now she has 4 and makes a very comfortable living. She doesn't even roll sushi herself anymore and just hires cheap labor.

IMO, much better than $500k/store for a failing subway franchise.

They were serious about the sharing thing, you got one warning then they said they would charge you for another plate. We never pushed are luck past the warning because the lady was like a bipolar ninja, super polite but would snap into combat mode and yell from across the restaurant and wave a pack of chopsticks in a very threading manner. We were drunkin teenagers and she was not taking any shit

i've never seen the frying thing anywhere else, it might have just been something the guy came up with, im also not sure how they pulled it off because it made it crispy almost like breading crispy but it was just rice and it was a light fry i didn't get greasy at all. i tried looking it up but i can only find people battering and deep frying and that not the same thing.
>>
>>12621145
I have never tried wegman's sushi but I've gotten it at Giant before, lots of the stores have $5 sushi wednesdays. The stores that have a contractor/supplier company called hessho make pretty decent stuff, not worth paying normal price for though.
>>
>>12622281
>>12623136
Did you have one shot to pick your all you can eat quantity or could you keep ordering in smaller intervals?
>>
>>12618265
I make my own. It’s fun and costs less than shitty grocery store sushi.
>>
>>12623539
one shot and you needed to what you wanted by name because there were no pics or display, it was all one family in what seem like a hole in the wall but inside was nice. It was in Ft lauderdale FL. i haven't been down there in years so don't know if they're still around

because their shit wage slave job pays so much more in the north so come here and can afford to buy a house for like one year salary, which fucks over Floridians because it makes the prices in the housing market inflate we have no legitimate way to earn earn enough to afford a mortgage.
>>
>>12623805
Also old people and summers that make going outside and going into a sauna indiscernible. Living down here is a curse, the only good part is all the cute little reptiles and wildlife everywhere. I live in a neighborhood and my backyard is a miniature jungle teeming with life and I like to watch it.
Besides that, living here sucks and you'd be better in Cali, genuinely.
>>
>>12623867
yes, fuck off were full.
>>
>>12623805
Northern Florida is literally LA, MS or AL, a sewer swamp inhabited by swamp rats. I've never been to southern FL because I avoid NY jews and expatriate Cubans.
>>
>>12618265
Man any
Walmart
Crest
Target
Trader Joe's
I don't care if it's not as good as restuarant. Slather it in spicy mayo and I'm yours bby
>>
>>12623457
Is it possible he rolled the outside in cornstarch or something before throwing it in his 5000btu wok for 10 seconds? I know you said you were drunk many years ago but that's all I can come up with. in fact, I'm drinkin now and it sounds like a good idea to me.
