>>11568279alcoholism is heritable, most people are not susceptible to it. But your mother drinking a lot doesn't make you an alcohol, just the fact that your mother apparently carries the alcoholism genes is what matters, not the influence her behavior has had on you most likely
>>11568352Was a joke on my end, but yeah, I think the genes fucked me up. I abused alcohol for around 2 or so years. And while I am down to one day of drinking a week I get out of hand. I wish there was a way to reset my mind but it looks like its just something I need to give up

>>11567940God, I paid like $9 for a six pack of their APA like 6 months ago thinking they were doing something craft tier and 4 of them are still sitting in my fridge. I'd have been happier just sessioning their OG crap for half the price.
>>11568221Maybe buy things that don't come in 6 packs for the most part? You'll probably have a much more quality experience.
>>11568753Your OP is a Californian who was tickled by that anon's attempt to claim a 20 state wide swathe of the US as a single, superior, beer producing region.
>>11568783Sounds about right. I was really thrown off when an anon said it's not about coastal vs inland, but West Coast vs the North, when the PNW literally has "north" in it's name. It's just weird; everyone knows what "the South" refers to (more or less), but I've never heard anyone actually say "the North" to refer to the fucking Union.

>>11568814>muh ipas taste like grapefruit juice, too bitterEverybody who likes beer enjoys the hop forward West Coast style with Amarillo and Centennial. 4channel is just contrarian so pretends to hate everything popular - or they're just flyovers who've never had a decent hop forward beer when it was fresh.

>>11568849NJ should be split. North Jersey is more New York and South is more Central Atlantic since they associate more with Philadelphia.
>>11568849Names aside (jesus fucking christ) there are too many things wrong with this map to address in my drunken state. It's not bad, and I agree with Wisconsin being in the blue (that's probably controversial, and I could also go in the direction of adding Michigan to the Chicago region), but Idaho and Montana aren't in the Pacific Northwest. And everything in Denver Region other than maybe Nevada is basically a wasteland in my experience.
>>11568928I was just trying to find a US regional map that was close-ish and this was the best thing to come up. You're right that some states don't do fuck all for beer, but they have to be grouped somewhere. Idaho is definitely part of the Pacific Northwest geographically speaking, though it's not a relevant beer producing state.Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas might as well be grayed out.
>>11568937>Idaho is definitely part of the Pacific Northwest geographically speakingBeer speaking, anything East of Bend is basically flyover country. Also, Idaho is landlocked, so how the fuck is it PNW? I've only ever heard that term used to refer to OR/WA.

>>11568832As a westcoastfag who loves IPAs, I've always wondered why flyovers hate IPAs. Then I ventured east of the Rockies and found out why. None of the midwest breweries can make a decent IPA.
>>11569074>None of the midwest breweries can make a decent IPAWhile true, this is basically the equivalent of going on /pol/ and criticizing literally anything Trump did or said. Any style of beer can be good but most craft beers in general are somewhere around "mediocre" and only look good in comparison to whatever macro is on the shelf next to it; in some places this means that you have a bunch of unremarkable lagers or stouts or whatever but in the west in general and on the west coast in particular it means you're drowning in beer that's "passable" but then hopped to oblivion because that's a cheap and easy way to make a nothingburger or gimmicky experiment palatable and appealing to the average craft beer drinker on the west coast. On top of being lazy it's also fucking obnoxious; a place with a dozen beers on tap might have 6+ IPAs - especially in the summer.

>>11571592As a Clevelander, I've really been unimpressed this year. Thirsty Dog has been bad too. I think Fatheads Holly Jolly is the best I've had this year, Alpha Klaus was up there too.
>>11571602That was the first Christmas beer I've had, but I'd buy it again. I usually skipped seasonal gimmick beers but I've upped my consumption in general this year and I've been branching out.
>>11571611I don't normally care for them, but I'm open to trying them every now and then when I'm out or picking one or two up when I'm buying single beers. Actually, another one I'd recommend is the Platform Holiday Donut Cookie Beer. We went up there for the tapping of that to get the mug. Honestly though, most holiday beers are gimmicky crap and now there's this trend where people just take an IPA and throw a bunch of spruce tips and holiday spices in and it tastes like garbage but it makes pleb palates feel adventurous so they buy it up every year. Pumpkin beers come out and they all flock to it. Christmas beers come out and they all flock to it.
>>11571652Yeah, I know what you mean. I actually like a few pumpkins. Ballast Point's Pumpkin Down was decent last I had it, and here in Wisconsin Lakefront makes a genuinely enjoyable pumpkin beer.I'll keep an eye out for those suggestions, though.
>>11569226From the look and taste of it I am pretty sure they just make kombucha, but instead of a scoby colony use beer yeast to ferment. Seems easy enough to do.
Picked up a bottle of 2018 BCBS on a whim last night. Is this year any good?
Where do you guys get your homebrewing supplies? It's been awhile since I've brewed anything, but I needed some bottle caps and starsan so I went to Northern Brewer and realized that if I added another item I'd get free shipping and a pint glass, so I bought some brewing gloves just to use around the house. They had medium, large, and extra large, and I went for the large, even though I use XL with the gloves at work. Turned out they were way too big, so I contacted them and asked if and how I could send them back in exchange for mediums and they said they wont be able to resell them so instead of wasting my money sending them back they'll just refund the costs and to just order the mediums.I really like supporting local brew shops, but I've never had that good of customer service before. Not even shilling for NB; haven't ordered from them in years. Anyone else too busy/drunk to brew these days but still buy shit from homebrewing shops to use for other purposes? I use the bottle caps (and bottles) to store shit like frying oil and homemade sauces, and the starsan as an all purpose food safe sanitizer.

The second time we were doing a NE road trip that involved checking out a ton of breweries, and then we were like, "hey, it's less than 2 hours to Montreal, let's do it!" Ended up staying for a week and it was great, but didn't do any research and when I went to the grocery store to pick up some beer it was an absolutely terrible selection, and everything was really weak. Do you have to go to a special store to get bière forte like a pot dispensary or what?
>go to liquor store to get a six pack>end up spending $30+ on multiple thingsJUST
>>11573188Your best bet is the breweries themselves... Liquor stores (LCBO, SAQ, ANBL, etc.) will carry some heavier and more interesting things. The depanneur is going to have your usual macros - Canadian, Blue, Carling, Coors, that kind of thing. Beer stores/standalones and liquor stores might not always have what you're after, but they can usually order it in.

Total Wine keeps EtP behind the counter and only sells a couple bottles at a time, but that's mostly because of flyover fags trying to buy it up and sell it back East; I can usually find it on tap at 2-3 places within a 15 minute drive, unlike Goose Island fags who line up for BCBS like it's PtY.

At the base PseudoSue and Pompeii have to be some of the best sub $10 4 pack beers around still with DDH Sue perhaps being the best beer of that style I have tried. As far as I can recall every single one of their DIPAs I have tried is excellent. Good limited release stuff just doesn't sit on shelves, I'm sure I could have found some without waiting in line with a little effort and I occasionally run into it on tap randomly, but in most places with a robust beer market you are not gonna just happen upon a large stock sitting at a liquor store weeks after release

Toppling Goliath was easily better than anything I came across out west and at least on par with the best stuff I had in New EnglandFor a 5% ABV grocery store available beer like PseudoSue there was nothing even close to comparable out west
>>11573998I don't remember the recipe off the top of my head but I think that centennial is in for the 60 minute boil so it's going to need some calming down.
>>11574039>and buy your beer at a liquor store. Most beer stores are liquor stores. Most good beer cities don't need many dedicated beer stores because regular liquor stores are actually willing to stock really good stuff. The thing you must note about California is that beer in general, and craft beer specifically makes a significantly smaller portion of alcohol sales than in the rest of America so liquor and grocery stores devote less space to good beer and beer in general than most Americans are used to making it much harder for local brewers to get on shelves
>>11574016shit I haven't even had Goon Juice yet somehow, they always have so many good and new things on tap somehow I have missed it
>>11574051I was actually talking shit on people for whom direct to public can releases are not the bulk of their beer consumption. If it's not a brewery / tasting room can pickup I'm probably not drinking it.
>>11574103you don't like drink in tap rooms? Or at restaurants or bars even?
>>11574055Then you're a confirmed tastelet.
>>11574115Please tell me a base tier beer I should have been able to find in California grocery stores that is better than Pseudo Sue
>>11574110I drink at breweries, and most of the breweries I go to are bring your own food or have food trucks on site. That forms the bulk of my dining out. If I go eat at a restaurant with more common beers, I usually just have iced tea and drink beer later. Why pay a premium for a pour of subpar beer? There are certain distributed beers that I'll drink if a restaurant has in cans or on tap. There's a place I go to that often has Port Brewing or Mikkeller in cans. A local taproom / bottle shop often has good local stuff on tap, but again it's bring your own food.
>>11570252True beer lovers will drink anything:)
>>11570946Biked through Quebec this summer and Unibroue is like, less than $4 Canadian a bottle in some places. Drank through their entire repetoire and tried a lot of other breweries on my way across. Quebec is honestly an amazing place to drink beer. Most breweries I sampled from were top notch and I can't remember drinking a bad beer anywhere in the province.
>>11574118Modern Times Fortunate Islands is the king of west coast pales and it's distributed throughout CA. El Segundo Citra if you were in southern California.
>>11574069Cascade in right away, Amarillo closer to the end, makes sense. I think in order to drink it by Christmas, you might need a little something at the end of the boil. Even if you add half of the Amarillo earlier (30-45 mins), and the other half in the last five mins.
>>11574148Going out to breweries and taprooms would probably be the first thing I put on my PoF profile under interests if I ever started a PoF profile, but you just made me realize how insufferable that sounds. Thanks.
>>11574160It's a pretty great place regardless... except for driving in Montreal... or speaking French RP French in Rimouski (I gave up and just switched to English). Some of the experiments aren't my favourite. Belgian IPAs with a Quebecois accent come to mind.
>>11574118>>11574055>>11574072When visiting California and seeking a selection of craft beer at a grocery store, find a Whole Foods. There's usually very respectable stuff in their beer cooler, more like what you're used to seeing at home. Normie grocery stores in this state only carry normie beers, probably because liquor is more popular than beer here.
>>11570252Pick a side, fag
>>11573404>1956>The monastic community develops a Christmas beer that is now known as Chimay Blue Cap.
>>11569074Westcoastfag here. The reason I've started to hate IPAs isn't because of the taste, it's because of the overabundance of them in every beer aisle I see in the grocery store. There's always like fifty fucking IPAs clogging space meanwhile other beers I like only get one or two soaces for them. Just sucks when you wanna have something else for a cgange yet your only options are a gorillion craft IPAs, the same two craft porters, stouts, and red ales you've drank a million times over and Bud.
>>11575238Stop looking for beer at the grocery store. At least go to Whole Foods or find a local bottle shop. Which part of the West Coast are you in?
>>11575238Eascoastfag here. Other shit just doesn't sell. The only thing I've seen rotate half as fast as pale ale is the pre-prohibition lager craze. >>11575482It's the same in bottle shops. An aisle for IPA and an aisle for everything else. Ale dominates.
>>11575487I'm sorry your City is terrible, the bottle shop near me has very little IPAs compared to somewhere like Acme. They prioritize local breweries from PA which is great. Nobody I know likes IPAs here but it might be different downtown where hipster fags are.
>>11575498It is what it is, people don't like to chew their beer most of the year around here. There's a good selection of Belgian styles as well and a rotation of other things, but ales are dominant along with lagered everything and the occasional kolsch. And honey wheat ales. I actually get a pretty broad selection that rotates regularly, but the selection at most grocery stores is pale ale dominant. Taps are where you see more variety because a lot of places don't even bottle half their shit.
>>11575498>go to Pittsburgh>every bar is just packed with beers from Cleveland and beers from Ohio
>>11574038The Mason Dixon like has spoken: Missouri is the south. Also St Louis has some DANK breweries, check out 4Hands if you’re ever there, the Incarnation IPA is one of my favorites ever, and they actually do good stouts too for a change.
>>11575935*line not like. fuck me
What would you guys say is a good set of ingredients for home brewing? My brother is going to be getting a home brew kit from his wife's brother and she suggested I get him some ingredients.I'm not exactly sure what though? Dried fruits? Some kind of spices, though I suppose those are more for ciders or something? I've never done it so I'm not sure what to get. Any help is appreciated.
>>11575986Buy him a book on brewing, read some of it and maybe find some ingredients for a beer recipe that you think he'll like.Don't just go buying ingredients without any real forethought
>>11576003You are right. I didn't want to buy just whatever ingredients for the beer, which is why I asked. But a book would probably be better since he can pick out what he wants.
>>11575986Start with a basic kit in a style he likes that's easy to brew with a limited kit. Basically most ales. Partial mash kits are some of the easiest to start with, you get to feel like you're doing something other than pouring in liquid malt extract. If you dont have a mash tun, a 10 gallon pot and a powerful propane burner you aren't going to be able to do all grain recipes. You really have to know what you like and what to do with it to buy individual ingredients.
>>11574096I was talking to my friend who also loved it, but he said it's not always consistent across the times he's had it. I had it twice and thought it was consistently fantastic, but he's made more trips there than me so he'd probably know. I'm just saying, don't think I'm crazy if it doesn't live up to my hype. Don't hate me.
>>11575986Equipment that doesn't come with a basic kit is a much better gift than picking out a recipe kit or random ingredients. My favorite buys were probably a wort chiller or a bottle rinser/bottle tree combo.
>>11576009If he's a complete beginner then John Palmer is the classic go-to. You can read it online for free, but it's still nice to own a hard copy. If you want to spend a little more throw in the Oxford Companion to Beer

>>11570016Made beer. Time to wait.
>>11577960What’d You make anon
>>11578024IPA straight from the box. Tasted good, a little green, but not bad for raw wort. OG of 1.071. They didn't have galaxy hops so I'm just going to let it ride unless I get a wild hair up my ass and pick up some citra as a substitute to dry hop.
>>11576743It may seem silly, but this was my beer of the year last year. I drank so much of this and I was pissed it didn't come back this summer.
>>11568675much as I like adjunct stouts and the like that was legit one of the foulest beers I've ever had. To each their own, but to me it tasted like off-brand Reese's Pieces and imitation chocolate syrup.
Burning a bunch of my leftover vacation days to go on a beer trip with a buddy up to the Boston area- we're NYC based. Going to hit Two Roads on the way up, and once we get to Boston it's going to be Lamplighter, Aeronaut, Trillium (I know, I know) Harpoon, and Night Shift, with a jaunt out to Framingham for Jack's Abby and Springdale. Anything else recommended in the Boston/Somerville/Everett area not on this list?
Craft beer is gay. Drink fucking straight alcohol like a real man or continue to suck fruit juice like a castrated cuntbag.
>>11578783>New Yorker>taking a trip to drink at Trilliumsave the vacation days and just enjoy some Other Half ffs
>>11576050I live like two blocks away, I'll probably end up there some time this weekend and try it
>>11578929Gotta burn them before the end of the year (my workplace only lets me carry over a few and they don't cash out unused ones) and I was at Other Half a couple weeks ago. I'm not really an IPA guy (which rn is 15 of their 18 taps) so I don't go there often but I'm at KCBC, Grimm, and a bunch of the LIC breweries pretty regularly. Any other NYC people in here?
>>11576743It's not small batch at all, but I can never find Schloss Eggenberg's Samichlaus and Urbock at the LCBO. I used to be able to order it in, but now they won't even do that for me.
>>11578053I hope the Christmas deadline works out for you man.It turns out (just kind of accidentally) that what I shoved into bottles this past weekend should be ready for my cellmate's birthday in January... probably best around Valentine's day, but we'll see how much the drunk can drink in that month and a bit.
>>11576780Who here /canrelease/ life?

What's your beater beer? I am defaulting to the Modern Times online sale monthlies for days when I don't want to dip into my stash of fire.
>>11567721Just brewed my first batch of beer, using pic-related. It's not bad but it doesn't really taste like a good brown ale. Idk how to describe it but it just doesn't have the right brown ale flavor to it. It doesn't have as much of the "nuttiness" that brown ales are known for. Like if you took a brown ale and then took away most of the brown ale character. What'd I do wrong? Or should I not brew from pre-packaged ingredient boxes like that?
>>11583004Could be the malt in there, might be your water. It's not a style I make often, and I've yet to hit it on the head, but if you're making it entirely from grain, or steeping some specialty nonsense in, it would probably look something like this for a 5 gallon batch:>4 lbs pale 2-row (or about 3lbs of pale extract)>4 lbs Marris Otter>1 lb Crystal 80 Malt (60 might be a bit sweet for a "nut brown")>12 oz Biscuit Malt (or another pound of Marris Otter)>4 oz or so of Light Chocolate Malt (the 350 stuff, not the 450)>English hops - East Kent Golding is probably your best bet, but Fuggles, Brewer's Gold, that kind of thing will work. Nothing too piney, citrusy or fruity, which rules out a whole bunch of American hops.>1 oz at the start of the boil>1 oz at around the 45 min mark, just before you toss in your finings to help keep the crud down. You'll want to aim a bit high with your water, depending on what you're cooking with. Expect to lose at least a gallon and a half to boiling and trub/transfer. You'll also want reasonably hard water - something with a decent carbonate content. If your tap water is reasonably soft (and it will be chlorinated, so boil it first, and then let it sit for a few days before you start your beer), you can get calcium bicarbonate salt for your water. It won't take much more than a pinch (half a gram's the usual prescribed dose). With the sanitation and the boiling, and the lautering, and all the testing, it sounds like a lot of work, and it is, but if it's something you enjoy doing, it's absolutely worth it.
>>11567721every single day. EVERY SINGLE DAY I HAVE TO SCROLL PAST THIS BEAUTIFUL BERRY BEER THAT I WILL NEVER HAVE.DELETE THIS THREAD, OP.DELETE IT.
>>11583233Do you want a recipe for blackberry beer? I can figure one out for you.
>>11583207Thanks! I'll look into that, especially adding more water. I definitely wasn't an ounce over 5 gallons of water and may have been closer to 4.5. Do you recommend using the pre-boxed ingredients like I posted above or do you just buy the ingredients separate?
>>11583233Look into beer trading. Midwesterners on normiegram are always looking to trade 450 North for other stuff and are potentially interested in what you have.
>>11583271I enjoy making beer from scratch - all grain, ground at home... it's actually an excuse to drink while I take half a day away from everything else, but it's enjoyable.I've heard that some kits are quite good, and those that aren't can be tweaked until they are, but it depends on how fresh and accurate the ingredients are.I do think that altering your water chemistry, and amount will help you get the flavour you're after. Steeping a more biscuity malt as an addition might help too.
What is with the fucking meme that people will drink shittier stuff when they're already drunk? I feel like I'm even more critical of bad flavors when I'm inebriated.
Saw this on sale at a beer shop in my city. Actually pretty happy with it.
>>11573523>They have shit tastePlease don't tell me you're one of those people who think Foster's is representative of Australian beer
>>11568675Why did you pour it in a frozen glass? Strong porters are meant to be served at around 13-16 celcius. To bring out the complex taste.
>>11573350Most proper craft breweries do one these days.
Strongest coffee flavor out of all stouts I've tried. I love it.
>>11567766why do people take pictures like this, resting their beer on a filthy outdoor wall with a chunk of what looks like bird shit and could easily be bird shit since surely millions of birds have shat right there and it's just been rinsed away by rain
>>11584702That's my favorite beer. I'm not a huge beer drinker tho.
>>11584540The maple bourbon barrel aged version is one of the few good BA beers founders has put out this year.
>>11583004How long did you let it mature before sampling? Always double the bottle conditioning time in instructions, have yet to meet a homebrew that was at it's best four weeks after the brew day.
>>11584776anon and the phantom stain
who /hairofthedog/ here
>>11584702That's interesting, considering the relatively low ABV.
>>11584776pic is from some northeastern craft beer thot's instagram feed, so I guess that's who>>11585584what does coffee flavor have to do with ABV?
>>11584776Because drinking out in the wilderness is fun. I take a 4 pack of two hearted with me on any hike I go on
>>11585632Higher ABV usually indicates greater concentration of flavour in beer/spirits. It's entirely possible this beer punches above its weight due to good brewing and ingredients, though.
>>11585774I used to think this, but have had too many great session ipas and lower abv stouts with a ton of flavor that I think the higher abv mostly assists the body of the beer. The higher ones are commonly thicker feeling. I had a 3% stout that felt like an 8% body wise. That's still one of my favorite stouts just because of how impressive it is to get that type of body from a 3% stout of all things
>>11585786Again, I'm not denying that a 'weak' bear can't have a full taste because there are many variables that control that factor, such as use of brewing malts, flavoursome adjuncts, residual sugars/proteins etc. However, higher dilution will weaken taste by reducing the concentration of the brew; it's basic chemistry. With that said, too much alcohol can drown out the subtle notes you want in a beer, so toeing that fine balance between 'over-intense' and 'feeble' is a tricky job for any beer. Here's one that I think does a good job.
>>11571378I trust you, anon
>>11586096That's probably the best Miller you can grab, so good job freshie.
>>11586118Miller lite ain't bad
>>11586126If I'm drinking a light beer for some God forsaken reason, it's Michelob Ultra. Or Bud Light Lime.
>>11586139Michelob golden light is solid. BLL is unfortunately delicious
>>11585774Higher ABV indicates a higher base malt content. The flavour is just about everything else, unless using a very lightly toasted base malt, like a Vienna, Munich, or M-O.The coffee notes come from darker malts (chocolate, high L crystal/caramel, and black/patent malt), which really don't add to the alcohol content - most of their sugars have been converted into things that S.C. yeast can't break down, such as caramel, or char.
I know its a meme beer but I saw a Sculpin that was spruce flavored and I was too curious to pass it up
