It's definitely not a brown widow. It's possibly Araneus illaudatus, a harmless orb weaver. I get those where I live, too. Or maybe Neoscona crucifera? It's hard to tell, and I'm no expert. You can go to Bugguide.net and see if any of those look like your spider.
