https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/which-are-smarter-cats-or-dogs-we-asked-a-scientist>Another surprise in their research came from raccoons, those clever masked bandits. The raccoon brain is the size of a cat brain, but it holds as many neurons as a dog’s. The ratio of the raccoon’s brain size to its number of neurons resembles that of some primate brains.>“The very large number of neurons that we found in the raccoon cortex fits very nicely with the lore about raccoons,” Herculano-Houzel said. “It matches with how incredibly ingenious these little creatures are and how good at problem solving they are when it comes to finding food.”The cutest AND the smartest! Why aren't these perfect animals more popular?
https://floridapolitics.com/archives/297064-justice-raccoon-petition>“Thomas Cope’s actions, whether he intended them to result in the raccoon dying or not, constitute an act of animal cruelty and he should face the consequences of his decision,” said Care2’s Rebecca G.>In addition to disbarment, the Care2 petition is also calling for criminal charges of animal cruelty. He should get disbarred for being such a dumbass. Sure, he got rid of a very cute varmint, but don't brag about it and post the evidence online!
>>3031573disbarring a lawyer takes a lot more than that.F for racoon though.

Is this a unicoon or a raccoonicorn?
>>3031606Raccoonicorn. A unicoon is endemic to a few locations, like Chicago and Detroit.
>>3031571They are popular but living near them is bad: they can carry brain eating parasites in their shit, can get rabies, can seriously fuck you up if they want, can damage property
How fucked are we once raccoons learn how to use computers? It’s only a matter of time.
>>3032085>Only a couple thousand years off from developing opposable thumbsUnironically, how long until they gain sapience?
>>3032146I, for one, welcome our cuddly little overlords.
>>3031573poor coon didn't deserve it
Is “trash panda” the n-word for raccoons?
>>3031573What an asshole, hope someone kills him.
>>3033544nanny coon confirmed, legalize now
If they had thumbs they'd be dangerous
>>3035644They're dangerous if your pets come into contact with their faces or urine they're just a meme/pest
>raccoons orginated in the United States>Japan imported a bunch of them decades ago because they thought they were cute and now they’re wrecking their temples>mfw this is indirect terrorism from the United States on JapanHow can one animal be so based?
>>3035774This is just revenge for Kudzu
>>3035774Serves them right for giving us those Japanese Beetles.
>>3032146All animals are sapient and all animals are sentient. Total misnomer. You should ask "how long until they have the capabilities to communicate with humans in complex language" and the answer is probably never unless specifically "uplifted" and eugenically selected for that task.
What a majestic and smart animalTruly humbling

>>3031573Poor fucker got a one in a million chance of being saved but died anyway.
>>3042699Sauce is in OP's image
>>3031727All similar traits to cats, what a surprise
I got scared shitless of racoons ever since I saw that woman who lost her fucking arm because of a single bit of one. She's field testing a robotic arm with feel touch, but still it's a pretty shitty fate. I'd never approach a raccoon.
>>3044428Freak infection though and not the raccoon tearing the arm apart.
>>3031727Raccoon roundworm is blown way out of proportion. There have only been 23 cases in the US as of 2018 according to the CDC and only 6 of those led to death.Just don’ tput your hands near your face after going outdoors and you’ll be fine. (Most cases are kids who did that while playing outside.) Unless you have raccoons living in your attic, it’s really nothing to worry about.
>>3044533>mfw I work outside all day, including meals and raccoons live in my ceiling
>>3044047Same for dogs furfag. Loose mutts kill more people in the US than every other animal combined.
>>3045455I thought bees killed the most by a landslide.
>>3031571Because they can't really be tamed
>>3031571It's all fun and games until the go into heat when it's time to mate and rek your house like a 13 year old getting destroyed in R6 Siege.
I'm from the Netherlands and raccoons don't exist here in the wild, although I believe they were introduced in places like France some time ago. Are they actually this cute or are they generally a nuisance to deal with?
>>3047763Both, they're adorable to watch but will dig through your trash.
>>3047763Racoons are nocturnal, so most of the time you only know theyre there when theyre making a shitload of noise at 1 am or when your bins are knocked over in the morning. In that sense, theyre mostly annoying, but aesthetically, they are quite cute. Like cats of the forest.
>>3047763They are cute but can also cause problems and spread disease. It isn't cute to wake up to your trash can tipped over, all bags torn open and strewn everywhere.
>>3047790poor baby ):
>>3047790>>3047790I'll admit, they're pretty funny to watch..
>>3032146>>3035644How many mutations do you need for opposable thumbs? I feel like they get enough use out of their hands that if a mutation for opposable thumbs or a step up mutation toward opposable thumbs occur it'll spread like a forest fire in summer
raccoons are in fact actual units
>>3044468Technically not a freak infection. Raccoons are known to carry many diseases. A lot of things lie dormant in their bodies that are dangerous diseases and bacteria. While also being clean like washing their food and digging latrines their biology is harmful if they carry a disease that doesnt work in a raccoon body. That's why you should always be careful of wild raccoons, while adorable they can show signs of being healthy while being very capable of transmitting a lot of infections and bacteria that can be deadly to humans. That's why it's always important if or when you rehab a raccoon you make sure you get it checked out and ensure that it doesnt have any diseases that it inherited from its mother.
>>3047763Really depends on your level of interaction. Urban raccoons are famous for being unafraid of new things. A lot of other animals share the trait of being afraid/hesitant to the unkown, raccoons will just get up on in there and just do things when it's a new concept. This means that it's way common for them to find a hole in your roof and make a home in your attic, it isnt afraid to live in human surroundings or interact with humans/get close to them. But at most they will just scavenge for food in trashcans and do it with no regard that humans knew it was there or not which means a big mess in the morning to clean up. Sometimes they will just approach you too and size you up as well. I've had that happen a few times. Also wild raccoons are fighty among each other. I hear a lot of racc fights in the woods at night.
>>3045886bees are based
>>3031571Raccoons are adorable and very smart, but they're also a bit of a pest and can be somewhat dangerous to dogs and such.

hello friendsthere's a momma raccoon in my very large attic, and I don't mind her being therebut for some reason she really likes rooting around in the part directly above my bed, which wakes me up constantly, no matter how much i go up and scare her off in the middle of the nighthow do I relocate a raccoon to the other side of the attic? internet says that harsh smells don't work, and using noise would defeat the purpose- would putting a strobe light up there work?
Are they more related to cats or dogs?I get a bear vibe from them

>>3032209>>3034913>>3035596>>3054194Okay, what is the point of calling them "coons" instead of raccoons. It's literally just 3 more letters. Maybe one of you actually grew up saying coon instead of raccoon, I'll give you that, but I know how much this website loves racist dogwhistles.Just remember that the difference in 3 letters can be a difference in ruining someone's day.Oh PS. If your gonna reply with something rude. Don't. Nobody cares about what you have to say :)
>>3052335The poor coon is obviously seriously malnourished. I know that it is supposed to be cute and funny but it isn't.
I think raccoons are awesome. I regret killing a few of them back when we kept chickens. We generally were able to coexist just fine because I would shut the birds up at night and they'd be safe. But 2-3 times (in 10 years) one would kill a chicken. Then I'd trap them and shoot them in the head with a 22. I never took any pleasure in that. They are really cool animals. They can also be absolutely vicious when cornered or trapped. I'd put a raccoon pound for pound up against just about anything.I hate it when I hear about people killing them. It is a shame. Raccoons did nothing wrong.
