I´ll teach you.
First, have the tools available:
1- 1 PC with a Gforce card, intel octocore processor and at least 48 Giga RAM;
2- A digital tablet to draw on the PC
3- 3ds Max 2016 and Zbrush installed
Fire Zbrush and begin with a 16 resolution dynamesh sphere - have a character scale prop for measurement if you already have characters modeled.

The brushes 'move topological' and 'inflate' are the essential base for my sculpts. Like a rough draft that you refine, you´ll gradually increase the resolution of the dynamesh as smaller appendages are added - fingers, ears, nose, etc. I recommend only activating sculptris after refining the mesh to above 128 resolution- right now is still 16, conting in a model of 1800 polys. This will increase... drastically, hence the RAM.

Pretty sure all he does is take DOA models and morph them. I'm basing that on the toes. DOA 5 needed to save some polys on their models, so they cut corners where it made the most sense, they decimated the character's toes. And that's fine, toes are tiny, and from 'fighting game distance' you're not going to see if toes are welded together or not.

As soon as people extracted the models, they noticed the toes thing and some modelers actually went through the process of fixing the models feet. But Crisisbeat didn't, he left the attached toes on the models, something no modeler would do unless they were reducing a character's tri count for game performance.

And to be clear, I don't think morphing/shaping someone else's model automatically makes you "bad" at what you're doing. But this goes specifically to the OP question "how do I learn to make this?" There's plenty of evidence here that crisisbeat didn't 'make' the model. How much work is he responsible for? Did he create the morphs? The textures? The poses, etc? No way to know without him telling, but if you want to make something similar, grab any game asset and start modifying it. Blender is a cheap (free) and easy entry level 3D modelling program you can load game models into and start manipulating them.

Np. Most of these up-and-coming 3D artists seem to be just ripping game assets and modding/animating them. Which is fine, but new artists (who want to be able to create models from scratch) might not know the trick being pulled on them. As far as the ethics question of whether it's "right" to use someone else's models for your own artistic work, that's a separate discussion.

I think everyone starts off just loading a ripped asset and seeing what they can do with it, nothing to be ashamed of unless, like you said, too many people start assuming it's your original work. The level 128 resolution needs to be the last for the dynamesh, as it´s too heavy for the general body but too few for face and fingers detailing - for that, we´ll use sculptris model for now on.

Sculptris mode allows for local mesh tesselation when doing the smooth brush (CTRL+left mouse). Now is the time to change the material to skin4 and paint a bit over the skin and face details, plus adding a basic hair - you´ll be able to reshape the face and body scales to match the reference better by doing this. Surprisingly, my bald version was not that much off from the original (but is still leagues different form it, so there´s much to do).

Don´t fret about detailing the hair yet, instead model the cloth props to try and match the source image as closely as possible. Remember that OP image is a photoshopped still (not even the bikini pearls is 3d) and this is the sculpting stage for an animated character.

When detailing nails, toes, eyelashes and eyebrows, separate those areas in different polygroups trough selection paint - this will ensure they keep smooth after Zremeshing. Nipples and vagina/anus were done too (trough i can´t show them here). Don´t worrying about getting a smooth mesh out of the sculpt model now, since this will only drag down GPU screen refreshing speed.

The Zremesh step is not one to be taken lightly - you´re cutting the retopology corner, a process that takes weeks when done by hand - so the first step is NOT to already reduce the polycount, but to fix the topology while still leaving the main bodymesh with a heavy polycount. Turn the 'same' button on on the 'target polygon count' option.

Bringing the polycount further down to 89.000 will be enough, as doing it further will ruin face details and a high polycount won´t affect deformation refresh speed in MAX much, but it will take more processing with 10 morphtargets for face deformation. In any case, this removes the need of turbosomoothing before render , so i re-increase polycount in the nose because it was turned into a single poly mound. The steps are: Zremesh, fix polys, UV Master, Subtool project all (the retopology model is a copy of the original sculpt, who´s used for this step) and texture map/new from polypaint (use a 4096x4096 UV to not lose resolution in the mouth or eye areas).

Was watching some stuff on Tvori and AnimVR.

The main issue I have with learning Blender is my difficulty getting what is in my head into a program, and using that program to "approximate" what was in my head in the first place.

Using my Vive to stretch and pose with my own hands sounds so much more intuitive.

Export everything to MAX. Now, the bodymesh is textured and we´ll create the props here - especially the eyes and hair. Don´t forget to use resource collector to store the bitmaps created in Zbrush on the model directory - they tend to disappear from the zbrush directories after reinstalls and such.

In max, refining the eyebrow and eyelashes by face extrusion and mesh editing (necessary to make the blinking morph targets and eyebrow facial expressions) will render the previous uvw from zbrush useless in certain areas, so we´ll need to throw the model back there later. GOZ enables this without the need to save the model to an external file. Both can do the 'symmetry' mesh deformation, necessary in max because unlike zbrush it can´t meshedit two sides of a model at the same time.

Throwing the model back and forth to re-unwrap the uv while maintaining the original texture can be a daunting task. The secret here is to use the new max model in zbrush as the base, raise it´s polycount and select polypaint/new from texture, clone the brush model, re-apply UV Master and project the model all over again - do NOT attempt to use the old sculpt, as it doesn´t have the new eyelashes that are a part of the final mesh.
Be warned that the projection process usually crashes Zbrush, so save a copy before going trough this step. After re-importing the new uv model to max, keep the lips, eyelashes and eyebrows colored by material ID/face subgroup, not from the main texture bitmap, as it loses resolution.

Reshape the hair in Zbrush - this time you can go to the old sculpt and use the meshes for reference. Don´t fret when zremeshing and Uv mastering it, it´s a non-symetrical model and simple in it´s nature.

The result has little to do with the workflow. The result is "bad" (arbitrarily aesthetically displeasing based on criteria established by the capricious cultural standards of your peers) because of the "taste" (standards) of the artist.

If you followed the same workflow but you started and sculpted 75% the same way except you adjusted the proportions and details to be more appealing, and then you picked more appealing colors, and more textures, and appealing shaders (but still used all the same steps) you'd get a more pleasing result.

Or in other words, imagine if this guy had started with a GOOD concept art and a preset color palette (on the concept art) and some nice PBR shaders for the sea shels and the hair and the accessories and the eyes, he'd have made something good.

Decide when the final mesh is done before making the facial morph targets, or you can end up having to remake everything. I slightly edited the belly area before setting for the final version. When exporting to Zbrush again, make sure all the props have their axis completely aligned all in the same spot, so you can use the Zbrush props as reference when reshaping the model, especially in the eyes. You´ll probably have to make extra morphs depending on the scene she´s in - tights/armipits bulges, genital deformations, etc.

It´s time for the BIPED, the character system created 20 years ago for 3ds max. The damn thing comes with ONE finger with one link, and one toe with three links - just change all to 5 with 3 links and don´t try to think much about it. Align the bip center exactly in the middle of the 0 world coordinate, and cautiously scale all the limbs to fit PRECISELY in every corner of the model - you´ll often hide all the geometry to animate only the biped, so you want to have it representing the exact scale of every mesh corner during those processes.

Select all the geometry and right-click in object properties options 'see trough and 'freeze' to better scale the bones. There´s a 'twist' option in the biped extras that you want to turn on - this will fix the wrist bug twist on the model animation, which also happens in the tight, upper arm and calfs. Use the copy posture tool to mirror the arms and legs, and be careful - if after that one of the sides is going out of the mesh, you haven´t centered it right. Select all the biped bones and right click on the objects properties 'renderable' option box and uncheck it, so it doesn´t show up on render. Avoid making them see-trough, as when animating the pure biped you need to see the green/blue colors of the left/right sides of the limbs, and see-trough always makes all them grey.

The secret to rigging forearms right it´s to activate biped´s forearm twist bone. Skin always - ALWAYS - get´s arms, legs, fingers, head and spine deformations wrong after applied. You have to select the vertexes from every joint and 'draw' the muscle being deformed by that specific bone. Use the weight too rollout and click in the blend button, selecting the area were the bones joint, and try to "fake" bulges using only the skin deformer.

You're doing an _offline_ render. Time shouldn't be a factor if your goal is to make something that looks as good as possible. If you're going to throw in fancy subsurf algorithms and whatnot, just spare the additional computing power and memory and make some pretty hair too.
I guess it's fair enough if your hardware can't even render particle hair, but in that case you should really be saving up for a better rig rather than forcing your machine to slave through it. The ROI won't take long if you're serious and know what you want to do.
